The search, off the coast near 1308 Palos Verdes Drive West, began about 8:20 p.m. Friday, when the owner of a boat the diver was using called the county fire department to report it, according to L.A. County Lifeguard Capt. Kenichi Haskett.
The boat was docked in King Harbor in Redondo Beach and he called our Hermosa Beach lifeguard station to report it being overdue, Haskett said.
He told us he had given it to a man on Thursday, who wanted to do some diving off shore, he said
Kenichi said the county lifeguards then notified the U.S. Coast Guard and began searching for the missing man and the boat.
We found the boat, an 18-foot motorboat, about a mile off shore near Palos Verdes, Kenichi continued. We also found a red buoy in the water bythe boat.

Free diving is very dangerous.
But at least it’s free.
Great white alert. Any bull sharks in that area? They are MEAN.
Some guys like to dive, hike or climb alone. It’s not a very good idea in my opinion.
Viz was 12ft. Not too bad considering but murky. Waves were pretty big. Some 6-7's mixed in.
Get to the reef. Lobsters EVERYWHERE! muttons EVERYWHERE. Clouds of them.
I only brought my bouy . No kayak or anything to hold lobsters or fish(out of water) So I caught a couple lobsters and started stuffing them in my wetsuit top. Remember these are spiny lobsters... I had 4 in my top against my lower back and stomach. I went down shot an nice mutton and put him on the fish stringer that was attached to my bouy. I get a little further out on the reef. And even more lobsters . Everywhere. Walking, holed up. Everywhere. Then next thing I know I'm engulfed by thousands of mangrove snappers. big boys too up to25 ". Monsters . I shoot one and get him to the surface.
Next thing I see is and 10 ft bull shark at the tip of my fins. So I said F this. Let the mangrove go.
Next thing I know two of the lobsters start freaking out in my wetsuit. I kid you not. I have never been so scared in my life. I swore I thought I just got bit by the shark. Ended up seeing two other while I worked on catching the rest of my Lobsters as the thousands of mangrove snappers and muttons just circled my head.
Many free divers work very hard to supress the bodies signals that it is getting low on oxygen. Some get too good at it.
Chum for sharks.
Sounds like you went looking for “scared” and found it!
An 18 footer a mile out? The Pacific must be pretty placid along that stretch of coastline, despite the nice breakers.
We have a 2 - 3 ft swell running now - you do see a few little boats when it’s small like this
Could very well be a Great White - they are certainly out here
Humboldt squid . There are a million of them that run up the coast from Mexico.
6ft tentacle monsters that eat anything

Back in younger (indestructable - ha) days we used to take a 21 foot Grady White (single outboard) 40-50 miles off Cape Hatteras. No other boat within radio range. After lunch we would dive in for a swim around the boat (drifting), no lifevest and no one on board. I get the gebbies now just thinking about it. Many other tales of foolishness that shall wait for my grandkids around the campfire.
