Historical movie, set during the Japanese occupation of China during WWII, in which a group of Chinese rebels tries to oust the Japanese forces from a small town. This has been a tough week. The shooting, the incredibly crass reaction of the democratic party to it. I have found myself getting and staying angry. Back to the personal favorite Steven Chow makes jokes and puns as he yuks his way through working class Hong Kong I'd not seen this before this week but it is really funny. I believe it comes from the PRC because the the writing in the credits appears to be the "simplified" version used in the Chinese mainland. This is a generational story about surviving hard times. This week is a bit different kind of comedy. Lydia Shum was sort of a female Danny Devito in Hong Kong Cinema. She was short fat and homely and played upon those attributes rather than trying to hide them. Generally she plays a harridan house wife married to a feckless husband who is a womanizing gambler or who has some other domestic issue. Instead this is a Kungfu romance about a Korean princess who has to marry the Chinese emperor and falls in love with one of the Chinese guards who dutifully resit his affection and does his duty by turning the princess over to the emperor.
