  • Asian Movie Weekend: Women on the Breadfruit Tree

    Netflix ^ | 2015
The link is for a synopsis. This available on Netflix in the US I haven't done one of these in a while. You can find previous installments by using the search terms: "Asian Movies" This is a 36 episode serialized romantic drama about the lives of three young women from different parts of China who find romance, marriage and love in Shanghai. Unlike similar dramas from Taiwan or South Korea this one is somewhat bitter-sweet so watch with tissues. Not for diabetics. I don't normally like sweet romance themed shows unless they are comedic but this one was good. This...
  • Asian Movie for the weekend: Monster Hunt

Monster Hunt Staring: Baihe Bai (The Kungfu girl), Boran Jing (The Grandson), and Eric Tsang (Chubby Hong Kong actor known for playing gangsters) This one is really fun. It has good CGI and special effects along with generally high production values. The plot is simply strange and rather convoluted and much more involved than your normal kiddie movie. I can't really even summarize the plot other than to ask you to imagine Maurice Sendak, Bruce Lee and Stephen Spielberg deciding to remake The Lord of the Rings, only set in ancient China and staring Wonder Woman, Dr. Who and the...

Historical movie, set during the Japanese occupation of China during WWII, in which a group of Chinese rebels tries to oust the Japanese forces from a small town. Starring: Ching Wong, Qiu Yuen, Yang Kao and a very young Jackie Chan (Before he got the iconic haircut) This is not the greatest Kungfu movie ever done but seeing a 19-year-old Jackie Chan makes it worth while. Eagle Shadow Fist Available for free on Amazon with adds or add free with Prime

This has been a tough week. The shooting, the incredibly crass reaction of the democratic party to it. I have found myself getting and staying angry. That means, or so it seems to me; it is a good time to sit back with a bowl of popcorn and watch something funny. This may be the funniest movie to come out of the PRC in 20 or 25 years. There have been several US versions of this (Meet the Fokkers) as well as one from South Korea but this one is better. It is really funny. This also shows the standard...
  • Asian Movie Weekend: All for the Winner

Back to the personal favorite Steven Chow makes jokes and puns as he yuks his way through working class Hong Kong I'd not seen this before this week but it is really funny. Maybe as funny as Kung Fu Hustle but a lot more manic and you will see several of the actors that appear in Kung Fu Hustle and "Shao-lin Soccer" In HD with good subtitles All for the WinnerEnjoy

More comic kung-fu Steven Chow at his rubber faced best. This one is bloody, bathroom humor, violent, bad sound effects, really funny but probably not for little kids. My HeroEnjoy

Being sick with pneumonia has meant I haven't done one of these in a while. I also have a new computer but the names on the ping list are still on the old one which I no longer have. I apologize on both counts. Most of the time the Hui brothers movies were series of gags stitched together by the thinnest of plots. This one is much better and reminds me of Abbott and Costello (Only with three people instead of two) This is a movie about the misfortunes of a working class Hong Kong family incur when the country-bumpkin...

I took a break from this list for two weeks but its back! This week we have a drama. I believe it comes from the PRC because the the writing in the credits appears to be the "simplified" version used in the Chinese mainland. This is a generational story about surviving hard times. It should require about 1.5 boxes of tissue per person watching as it is quite sad or emotional in places IMDb says: After Fugui and Jiazhen lose their personal fortunes, they raise a family and survive difficult cultural changes during 1940s to 1970s China. You Tube has...

This week is a bit different kind of comedy. Lydia Shum was sort of a female Danny Devito in Hong Kong Cinema. She was short fat and homely and played upon those attributes rather than trying to hide them. Generally she plays a harridan house wife married to a feckless husband who is a womanizing gambler or who has some other domestic issue. Unlike Stephen Chow or Sam Hui movies you have to pay attention to the dialog as the jokes are more verbal and often revolve around puns and plays on words. This is not to say there is...

You may find previous editions of this weekly post by searching "Asian Movies" in Free Republic. I had planned to recommend a serious and movingly romantic Korean film this week but after the bombs in Paris I sort of feel that this is a week for more light hearted fare. I have been looking for a Lydia Lum film as she is less well known in the West than she should be. The woman was Lucille Ball funny and if you find a way to watch the Singaporean TV Series "Living with Lydia" please do so you will not be...

You can find previous movies by using Asian Movies as a search term This week the movie is from Japan I am not sure if this a comedy of drama as the Japanese sense of humor can be quite different from the American, British or Chinese That I am used to. This is not a movie for children as it has considerable amounts of nudity and sex. The IRS only wishes it could behave like thisA Taxing WomanEnjoy

You may find previous additions of this topic by searching FR using the keyword "Asian Movies" After a break for romance last week we are back to martial arts this week. This film is part of a series but I have no idea which is the first in the series or if they are meant to be viewed in chronological order. There are no subtitles with this film but they aren't really needed to enjoy the action Ivincible ArmorFor those wanting a bit of comedy we have a Stephen Chow film that is his normal mix of irreverent bathroom humor....

Instead this is a Kungfu romance about a Korean princess who has to marry the Chinese emperor and falls in love with one of the Chinese guards who dutifully resit his affection and does his duty by turning the princess over to the emperor.
