I am trying to locate the title of a movie I saw some years ago, 1996 or so; it is Chinese, tells the story of a gambler who loses everything as the backdrop, the story of him and his family through the turbulent years of the Chinese revolution and Great Leap Forward; it was highly interesting and entertaining with it’s often-neglected themes of daily life among ordinary Chinese. I think puppets may have played a part as well. Any idea what movie I might be thinking of?
Thanks!

Is it To Live from 1994?

Your description was enough to turn it over to Google. I just searched for "chinese movie gambler revolution" and the first four entries were for that movie.

With all the good reviews I decided to check it out. At Amazon it was $60 for the DVD... yikes!

Pfft. Good stuff, sure. But you want some real good Japanime, try Ghost in the Shell, or Last Exile. Or Black Lagoon. It's a tremendous genre, and has tons of PG- to R- rated psycho-thrillers (Like Monster, or Ergo Proxy) that will take your brain and put it through the blender. And add some strawberry.

Yeah, I like Anime. Wanna start somethin'?

I recently caught a Korean movie called Spellbound/Chilling Romance and I loved it. I found it online and showed it to my wife and she loved it too, but I don't seem to be able to find it again.

It's a great movie about a girl who sees dead people and how that interferes with her ability to lead a normal life.

It has a couple of creepy parts, but it's mostly a romantic comedy. It's a hard film to really classify. I definitely recommend it.

Good stuff and I’ve got a subscription to Crunchyroll on my phone.

Not quite otaku yet... ;^}

Are you sure it is a Korean movie?

That sounds like the Hong Kong movie
“My Left Eye sees Ghost”

That one is on my list but I cannot find it in a free venue

I checked out My Left Eye Sees Ghosts on IMDB.com and it seems like a very similar movie to Spellbound/Chilling Romance. I'll have to see if I can find it.

I'm no otaku myself, but I love the Genre. I also have a crunchyroll subscription.

What are you watching right now? Me, I'm watching Durarara!

I enjoyed the first Durarara but 2 is more complex and not as much fun.

Owarimonogatari is my biggest interest this season since it’s the next part of the series — mostly for the amazing graphics.
