I took a break from this list for two weeks but its back!
This week we have a drama. I believe it comes from the PRC because the the writing in the credits appears to be the "simplified" version used in the Chinese mainland.
This is a generational story about surviving hard times. It should require about 1.5 boxes of tissue per person watching as it is quite sad or emotional in places
IMDb says:
After Fugui and Jiazhen lose their personal fortunes, they raise a family and survive difficult cultural changes during 1940s to 1970s China.
You Tube has a great non-pirated HD version of the film so be sure to watch the commercial first.
The movie is called "To Live" and it stars:
You Ge, Li Gong, & Ben Niu
Enjoy
She she ni, Fai Mao.

Did you ever see “Oldboy”, from South Korea?
incredible movie. Spike Lee’s remake. Non so much.
Kung Fury was stupidly funny.
No but I will put it on the list and look for it

I notice Asian movies can be much more intense and go to places American movies will not.
I read your posts. Will start looing for the movies.
Just started this on Netflix (about a naval conflict between N and S Korea):

Probably finish it tonight.
You can find the other Asian Movie Weekend threads by using the search term: Asian Movies.
I try to mix it up with drama, comedy, Kung-fu and monster movies
thanks for the tip.
Just started watching it. Thanks for the suggestion.
My wife (Chinese) is watching it now.
Thanks for the tip.

Good movie.
Gong Li is so beautiful.
Subtle in some ways. If he hadn’t gambled away his house, he would have been summarily executed by the gong fei after the revolution.
But the car thing for the one guy who drove in to the wall was telegraphed.
Shang Yimou made a subtly subversive film in this in that it showed the futility of the communist revolution and their rule. But in a read between the lines way.
He’d earlier made Ju Dou, also with Li (a horrible gawd-awful movie) which the communists didn’t like too much as they saw it as an allegory or symbolic of Deng Xiaoping.
I always thought in penance and fear for his freedoms life he went on and made the sickening Shanghai Triad (with the poorly under- or mis-used Li) which was a wonderful piece of propaganda for the communists.
He reached the zenith in his Chinese fascist propagandizing with Tianxia, actually known as Hero or Yingxiong.
Gong Li in To Live.

I’ll put you on the ping list.
As stated above. You can see the other films in this list by searching Asian Movies in the Free Republic index
When I was younger, I was prepared to run off with Chow Yun Fat...never happened but introduced me to Asian films!!!
