Raw Jobs Numbers the Press Won't Disclose Paint an Even Uglier Picture Than Currently Reported

In their coverage of government and other economic reports, the business press routinely tells readers that the figures they are relaying are "seasonally adjusted." That is, raw results are smoothed out to supposedly "remove normal, recurring variations" in data.

There's one notable exception: The government's monthly employment report.

As has been their habit for as long as I have been following these things, various Associated Press reports in the past several days (examples here, here and here) and at yesterday's New York Times failed to tag yesterday's reported gain in payroll jobs of 142,000 as "seasonally adjusted." There appears to be no reason for this other than to discourage curiosity among those who might otherwise be inclined to dig deeper. Doing so sometimes reveals that the seasonally adjusted figures understate the job market's strength. Other times, they appear to overstate it. As seen after the jump, especially in the private sector, the poor seasonally adjusted results of the past two months are nowhere near as bad as the underlying raw data:

Watch how the unemployment rate skyrockets when a Republican becomes President in Jan 2017.

Seasonal Adjustments should always equal 100% over the preceding 12 months.

I would like to know the source so that I compare the raw and the adjusted of the last 12 months to see if this is just a bald faced lie.

I think these guys are preying on the ignorance of the population, but the population isn’t believing the numbers because they are feeling the state of the economy personally.

And, they don’t even appreciate that, SkyDancer. They just clamor for more, more, more.

We are careening toward a significant and serious day of reckoning. I pray there are enough knowledgeable, patriotic Americans left so we can put this right.

Trick?

No trick.

They have actually lied straight faced about the numbers, and everyone knows it. If you ask them about it, they don’t know anything and what difference does it make, donchaknow?

When massive portions of society run out of food and clean water it’s insane how fast civilized people do the most deranged things to stay alive.

If you don’t have defenses, extra food, water, and a plan you better get one. I have a feeling the curtain comes down when the next President takes the helm.

Everything seems odd to me. It seems like the economy is fine where I am at. People are happy. Prices are going up. Product sizes are getting smaller. Housing costs are going up. Starbucks seems to do good business. It is hard to get a job. Nobody complains.

Maybe they are living on credit. Maybe welfare. Maybe they live with multiple people to a dwelling unit.

Maybe people are in denial.

I have to cutback to save money and survive.

“I have to cutback to save money and survive.” That’s a sure sign of a robust economy.
