Monarch Butterfly Antenna: A Hi-tech Tiny Toolkit
ICR News ^ | October 9, 2009 | Brian Thomas, M.S.

Posted on 10/09/2009 8:29:19 AM PDT by GodGunsGuts

Monarch butterflies have fascinated biologists for a long time. A 3,000-mile road trip in even the most comfortable car would prove daunting to many humans, but these beautiful insects can migrate that same distance every year from Canada to a specific grove of fir trees in Mexico each fall. The next generation of monarchs can then travel back to Canada in the spring.

Scientists are investigating the tools that these tiny flying creatures use to achieve this feat. One leading monarch researcher has discovered an important reason why the butterflies’ antennae are vital for successful navigation...

Sounds like another waste of government money. Who the hell cares why butterflies fly from one place to another.

Fascinating post. Especially the last sentence. Who would imagine that Science would print this, using Genesis as a reference?

And what better candidate for the identity of this engineer than the God of the Bible, who made every creature “very good” in the beginning, including the monarch butterfly with its amazing navigation system?

ICR is privately funded, I believe. The reason they study stuff like this is because the believe in bringing creationist research to an evolutionists world.

Why should the atheists have all the research?

Years ago while traveling in Mexico I encountered the Monarch migration. Millions of these astoundingly beautiful creatures swarming all around my car as they quietly fluttered by like living flowers on the wind, though gone in a few minutes the memory remains.
And yet, they are only one of many varieties that our Creator has blessed us with.

That reminds me... I need to refill the wiper fluid in my car...
That stuff is hard to remove from the windshield if you don't get it off right away.

Actually some of the work that is being done translates into our ability to make, smaller drones for the military. Being able to understand and possibly duplicate how insects get from A to B and back will make it possible for killer robots to be deployed with no human driving the little buggers. Better use of money that spending that goes to ACORN

If they printed his article as written, they included the author’s references.

Then there are the tiny hummingbirds which come back each year to my front porch and, if the feeder has not been hung in the same spot where it was in prior years, will hover at that spot over and over again until it is, once again, in its "proper" place.

After feeding, there is a spot on a small limb on a nearby maple tree where the hummingbird sits after feeding, and its position on that limb does not vary by six inches from year to year.

Evolution IS amazing, like a horse with four back legs and no head, it is credited with being “progressive” without direction, going somewhere but leading to nothing.

Thanks indeed!

I just bought a house with a huge backyard, with lots of natural trees and vegetation. I can’t believe how many different kinds of birds are back there. And speaking of hummingbirds, they sure are courageous little critters. They routinely dive-bomb birds that would probably just assume eat them for lunch. Amazing to watch.

I have 4 hummer feeders on my back deck, around where we sit. They come and go often. We have gotten to recognize different ones, and have named a couple of regulars. But, there are plenty more that we do not recognize. I have no idea how far they range.

The "dive-bombers" around here are blue Jays and Mockingbirds. I watched a Mock harassing a big Redtail Hawk with food in his claws. He would fly up and down to get away, but the Mock kept going and going and going...

Cool pick! For some reason my hummingbirds don’t feed from my hummingbird feeders; or if they do, they do so when I’m not looking. But we have lots of flowers growing on vines all over the place, so purhaps that’s why. I have also noticed that 9 times out of 10, if my wife is wearing bright colors while doing dishes in the kitchen window, they will hover just outside the window and look at her. They don’t pay any attention to me when I’m doing dishes, bright colors or no :o(

PS But the do pay attention when I’m out in the backyard with a hose. If I spray the water up in the air, they will hover about 10-20 feet above the water stream, and then dive bomb it. Very fun to watch :o)

No one. Because Science did not write that, ICR did. ICR likes to blur the lines all the time though, so your mistake is purposeful.

ICR is privately funded, I believe. The reason they study stuff...

I'm fairly certain the ICR does not actually "study" anything other than local politics, group think, and what the latest indices are regarding what creationists will swallow next.

Why should the atheists have all the research?

They don't. The vast majority of research scientists in all fields do not identify as atheists. And as far as ICR is concerned, they don't do "research." They gloss over real research and repackage it with quote mining and word games, always ending each blurb with, "It's very difficult to understand, therefore God did it." That's not research, that's apologetics.

‘These butterflies, therefore, have a well-organized network of data coordination involving light information captured both with eyes and antennae, as well as circadian clocks in both the brain and antennae. After considering the chemical, wind, and sound detectors within the antennae alone—as well as the geographic information that is somehow transferred to the second generation that enables them to travel to a location they’ve never visited—one can see that such specifications could never be generated randomly. For functionality, they would require an engineer to specifically design them to work in conjunction with the complex systems present in the eyes and brain to steer the butterfly to its programmed destination.

What empirical evidence does Mr. Thomas cite to support this assertion?

Brian Thomas* also has a wrong statement in the first paragraph. He states:

“Monarch butterflies have fascinated biologists for a long time. A 3,000-mile road trip in even the most comfortable car would prove daunting to many humans, but these beautiful insects can migrate that same distance every year from Canada to a specific grove of fir trees in Mexico each fall. Wrong.
The butterflies that are born in Mexico (east of the Rockies) or in costal California (west of the Rockies) do not fly all the way back to where they summer. There is another one or two generations in-between. The ones that fly south the next winter are the grand or great grandchildren of the ones that laid the eggs down south.

I have seen the Monarchs at Pacific Gove(between Monterey and Carmel)and saw more butterflies in that one little park than I have seen in the rest of my life.

I’ve harvested the larva and fed them until they formed their chrysalis indoors, to save them from insect and bird predators and watched them emerge. We didn’t have any around here this year and the butterfly weed plants were enormous but I’ve seen several adults in the past two weeks. Their timing must’ve been off this year.
