ICR is privately funded, I believe. The reason they study stuff like this is because the believe in bringing creationist research to an evolutionists world.
Why should the atheists have all the research?
Actually some of the work that is being done translates into our ability to make, smaller drones for the military. Being able to understand and possibly duplicate how insects get from A to B and back will make it possible for killer robots to be deployed with no human driving the little buggers.
