Most people on Daily Kos are (painfully) aware of Free Republic, the bottomless digital repository of bigotry, authoritarianism and hatred for most other Americans, all wrapped in 90's-era HTML. Usually, sane people who stop by there to check it out, find something utterly appalling within a few minutes of browsing, and close the page, never to return. Thus, there isn't a lot of detailed knowledge of Free Republic on Daily Kos.
One important feature of the site is that it is community-supported through donation drives called "Freepathons." In 2008, Jim Robinson, the site founder, seems to have decided to purge the archives of all but the current and most-recent Freepathon threads. This is a wise decision on his part because you don't have to go back very far to see that Free Republic is struggling to meet its modest fundraising goals.

They forgot to claim that all Freepers are around sixty-seven years old.
Just like the latest Vanity Fair issue claimed about Rush listners.
Perhaps I should dye my hair grey, grow a ponytail and shave the forward half of my pate.

It’s taking longer for freepathons to get to their goal, largely because of the pinched economy.
However, this would be chump change for the likes of Rush Limbaugh. Has Jim Rob thought of knocking on his door?

This is a wonderful site and even though I am HTML challenged, I love the format. Thanks JR!

...wrapped in 90's-era HTML And I say "HURRAY FOR THAT!". I can read FreeRepublic on my handheld, I can load pages on anyone's computer with speed unmatched by the "fancier" formatted blogs.
As far as I'm concerned, FreeRepublic's format is THE BEST for this sort of thing. If FR ever adopts the cluttered, ad-ridden crap formats of these other sites, I'll be reading it a lot less.

I love the format on this site and hope it doesn’t change. As soon as I get hubby’s med bills paid off I look forward to donating. I am sorry to see the folks at DU have such a narrow minded view of FR. Seriously. There is a pretty wide diversity of opinion here, and lots of well thought out posts.
I have seen plenty of posts supportive of Romney and Giuliani, so I find it hard to believe a person is banned if they happen to support either man politically.
Myself, I’d vote for either one were they the nominee.

The ability to post in HTML is helpful. I write most of my web pages directly, so the using HTML daily on FR keeps my skills fresh. My wife and kids play with Facebook and MySpace. I haven't been attracted to those sites. They are easy to use, so I'm spared the need to offer constant technical support while they play. FR has a great breadth of knowledge in the user population.
The only thing I miss in the FR interface is the ability to edit my own posts after spotting a spelling or grammar error. The immutable nature of a post is sometimes frustrating.

Lame criticism. Way too many web sites larded with needless Ajax, Flex, Silverlight cruft. I agree. This afternoon I was seeking information on the CanAm Spyder. I found the site. The author felt the need to stream engine sounds in the background. That sucked up lots of bandwidth. I would have enjoyed viewing the camera shots driving the Spyder, but all the other junk locked up Firefox 3.0.0.10. I was finally able to pluck the PDF file with the specs. Sometimes simple is better. Too much "cruft" makes a site unusable. FR is just sophisticated enough to deliver what I want to see without bogging down the browser with unnecessary network and CPU bandwidth hogs.

You do get a last chance in preview. Its easy to get overconfident and check the box. If I were king, I would force anything having HTML in it to go through preview.I always post with HTML and always read the preview. Sometimes that isn't enough. When you write something, it's possible to have your mind "fill in" the missing parts when "proofreading". You see what you want to see, not what is actually present. The final post appears a bit different from the preview. Sometimes you spot the goof at that time. It's too late.
