A Russian space official just admitted that Moscow has no strategy for combating an invasion by galactic marauders. Lucky for Planet Earth, the United States does have a plan. And it counts on Russia and America fighting together.
Sergei Berezhnoy, on the staff of the Titov Space Control Center near Moscow, said that Russian air-defense officers “have not been tasked with preparing for the contingency of an alien attack,” according to Rianovosti.
“There are enough problems on Earth and in near-Earth space,” Berezhnoy added.
A team of scientists from America’s NASA Planetary Science Division have disagreed. “While humanity has not yet observed any extraterrestrial intelligence, contact with ETI remains possible,” Seth Baum, Jacob Haqq-Misra and Shawn Domagal-Goldman wrote in a 2011 paper.
The scientists conceded that extraterrestrials could be friendly or ambivalent—but we can’t be sure. “Contact with uncooperative ETI seems likely be harmful to humanity,” they warned.
The Pentagon isn’t taking any chances, if one U.S. military instructor is to be believed. Prof. Paul Springer, a history teacher at the U.S. Air Command and Staff College in Alabama, told an Australian TV program last year that Washington has plans for even the least likely military threats—including attackers from beyond the solar system. “We make all kinds of contingency and war plans,” Springer said.
But America’s interstellar war plan is surely pretty thin. After all, the Pentagon wouldn’t know anything about the attackers until the first laser bolt or disrupter blast or photon torpedo was fired and Earth forces were already in retreat.
In the event of an alien invasion, “the first thing you would need to try to do is preserve your forces,” Springer said. In other words, hide. After that, “learn as much about the enemy as possible.” Presumably with spy satellites, drones, electronic eavesdroppers and old-fashioned sneaking around.
The aliens, meanwhile, would probably target Earth’s communications networks and its most potent weapons, nukes, Springer said.
As the world’s leading military powers, America and Russia would be the biggest targets … and the leaders in the eventual counterattack. Combined, the two countries could field huge air, land, sea and space forces numbering thousands of warplanes, millions of soldiers, hundreds of ships and most of the world’s spacecraft.
Assuming Earth survives and wins, human society could be turned upside down. Springer said former rivals could become close allies, even unified. “Keep in mind many of the greatest civilizations in human history formed to counter a common enemy,” Springer pointed out.
Plan or no, Russia is bound to join America on the front lines in the First Alien War.
Turtledove creates aliens whose society advances very slowly. They have near light speed ships but their weaponry is equal to early 21st Century weapons. So could a relatively small sized invasion force armed like the forces in Iraq 2 defeat an entire world armed with the weapons of 1943. But you are right. The series was a good read.

There is no way that any self respecting alien would come to this obscure planet in this obscure solar system in this remote galaxy when there are innumerable others to choose from. Just sayin.

The perfect ET (we are in fact observing an alien invasion) would be ET’s beating sword into plowshares, enslaving the world to manually farm, and mine. Taking earths natural resources back to its home world, including water and air. The population would die off eventually but not before extensive species research through the employment of anal probes and spinal taps...

Looking more every day like the Great deception will involve some form of ‘alien’s did it (excuse) ... the world must unite under one strong leader’.
If an alien race is that advanced that they could handle neutron start stuff, they would have no need to destroy humans in such a careless fashion, they would just create a virus to wipe us all mammals leaving non-mammalian life forms in tact. The alternative would be to create an artificial dna implant which renders humans passive in the main, tuned to a specific electromagnetic wavelength controlled by the ‘aliens’ ... and that is what the Bible predicts in so many words when the antichrist comes to power.

You may be right and wrong. Lol. This solar system may be very important when you consider history of the galaxy the past million years. How would we know otherwise ?
Trust but verify. A great motto from a great man. If the aliens were evil, we would all be dead. So verification may have been completed.
If that advanced, one missile from outside the solar system can be sent, with a virus to kill all targeted life. Easy peasy lemon squeezy. Hollywood and the CIA have got it all wrong. No landing craft needed. Heck they could just lob asteroids at us from the belt too.
A very advanced alien species would be building their own stars snd solar systems. For them, only one thing here would have value. And of course the average hairless ape sees no value in that thing.
I heard a rumor, that a certain religion out there, is preparing for a close encounter of the 3rd kind. Truly amazing isn’t it?

This is part of the Dark Forest theory - a corollary to the Fermi proposition about aliens.
All races hide but when discovering a new competitor the attack must be from a long distance - light years or close to it so the attack cannot be traced back and sure kill. No one would want to get as close as you suggest, lest they be discovered. Its fire and forget, then scoot away.
The best attack would launch a seed which on entering the solar system, ‘blossom’, transforming the entire system from a 3-D object to a 2-D or 1-D object.
Aliens would not care about some local religion or what some book said was supposed to happen. Aliens would see neutron star density stuff as child’s play.
If an alien race is advanced enough to overcome relativity, they have the means to end human life on Earth anytime they choose. There is no reason to destroy a perfectly useful planet such as Earth to get rid of the ‘plague of humankind’. Satan has wanted to destroy a portion of humanity for longer than I could surmise, and God has not allowed it. There is a transformative moment coming which will change everything, albeit ‘aliens’ might be an excuse for the ones not snatched away.
Sorry you do not understand the Dark Forest Theory. Perhaps a bit of searching would help - it has nothing to do with your religious beliefs.
