Astronomy Picture of the Day -- Creature Aurora Over Norway
NASA ^ | November 06, 2013 | (see photo credit)

Explanation: It was Halloween and the sky looked like a creature. Exactly which creature, the astrophotographer was unsure (but possibly you can suggest one). Exactly what caused the eerie apparition was sure: one of the best auroral displays in recent memory. This spectacular aurora had an unusually high degree of detail. Pictured above, the vivid green and purple auroral colors are caused by high atmospheric oxygen and nitrogen reacting to a burst of incoming electrons. Birch trees in Tromsø, Norway formed an also eerie foreground. Many other photogenic auroras have been triggered by recent energetic flares on the Sun.

The pines were roaring on the height,
The winds were moaning in the night,
The fire was red, it flaming spread,
The trees like torches blazed with light...

Well, it’s obvious, aint it?

That there is an Old One breaking through a weak spot in the fabric of time and space.

Heck. Anyone can see that.

Signs and Wonders? Or just random interplay of molecules and photons, etc. in a wavelength our rodent eyes can appreciate?

This Universe is awesome to apprehend,as we see through a glass, darkly...

Thanks, Bro.

Ya think?

Modernists would say you just happened to apprehend something that really doesn’t mean shit.

Those who have eyes, though, can see...

Tis the cold mountain range of the Norwegian dwarves and here is the evidence that they are keeping the trolls locked into the frozen far northern regions.

There was an amazing auroral display here in Chicagoland in what? ... 2007? something like that. It was noted in the papers, but I never saw anything reported that matched what I saw. I kept going outside to check periodically, and on one of these occasions, I saw what appeared to be huge bright sinuous beams, extending from horizon to horizon, and undulating on a subsecond time scale. It was absolutely mind boggling. Of course, they weren’t actual beams, but really the bottom edge of a “curtain”.

I’ve never gotten over the scant attention that this got, but that’s the way news works. Aurora? Ok, aurora.

The curtain effect is nice, however the multi-colored ribbons that undulate and dance across the heavens are absolutely phenomenal.

Well, I saw some of that, too, but it was relatively distant and dim. This “beam” effect is something I’ve never seen described. Like I said, horizon to horizon, lashing like a whip. Very bright and distinct. I couldn’t see the whole thing in one view, but had to scan back and both from east to west to take in the whole thing. It lasted several minutes. I only mention the curtain as an explanation, you understand. Its appearance didn’t suggest this, but a general understanding of the phenomenon tells me that this is what it must have been.

To me there is a resemblance to something else from Norway, Edvard Munch's painting "The Scream" and it's vivid sky.

Maybe he did encounter "An Old One" in passing!

There are strange things done in the midnight sun
By the men who moil for gold;
The Arctic trails have their secret tales
That would make your blood run cold;
The Northern Lights have seen queer sights,
But the queerest they ever did see
Was that night on the marge of Lake Lebarge
I cremated Sam McGee.
