38 German shepherds rescued from hoarding situation embark on new life (Orange County CA)

Over a dozen German shepherds, rescued from an abandoned house in Highland, California, are embarking on a new life with the help of a breed specific rescue agency. The German Shepherd Rescue of Orange County has been hard at work, pulling many of the homeless German shepherds out of the Devore Animal Shelter - on Tuesday, the founder of the organization updated Facebook followers about the rescue effort.

The Facebook post states, "Yesterday was another very rewarding day, with 6 more of the dogs from the Devore confiscation being removed from the shelter. The dogs have all been very agreeable, rather shy, but definitely sweet. Say what you will about the person who had them previously (he had mental limitations), but he really treated his dogs with love as demonstrated in their sweet dispositions."

I am updating the article.

A total of 38 German shepherds were impounded April 4 from a single household by the Devore animal shelter. All the dogs were released to the shelter on April 7.

Because only two of the impounded German shepherds were deemed adoptable to the public, the German Shepherd Rescue of Orange County stepped up and took 18 of them last week. This week the rescue picked up seven more. Four more were picked up by two other German shepherd rescues and a chihuahua, the lone non-GSD, was picked up by our rescue and will be sent to a small dog rescue. The rest are in no danger, just waiting for more funds and room at the boarding kennels.

The good news is the dogs were well fed, friendly to people and dogs, and outwardly in good health. The bad news is these dogs are covered in filth and feces, unlikely to have visited the veterinarian’s office with any frequency, not walked on a leash or rode in a car, and in need of socialization. They will be put up for adoption once they are cleaned up, groomed, checked out by the vet, and evaluated for socialization.

Can you help out in three different ways?

Don’t know their names yet.

That was one of five our volunteers cleaned up and groomed last Saturday. Only 20 more to go!

Just looking at that pic makes me think from the dog’s point of view- freedom from chains, or something like that.

I mean just look at what they cut off, good God, all of that is the weight of neglect.

Many times dogs pay a very high price being man’s best friend.

Imagine how good it must have felt to have all that fur cut off! Must have felt like a new dog!

That’s why I feel like it is the weight of the chains of neglect being lifted.

Just beautiful!

I have not personally seen the dogs close up (busy trying to get the available dogs get adopted) but the volunteers have said they show no signs of physical abuse or being tied or chained up and they were being well fed. They said all the dogs, both young and old, have a puppy attitude.

“What happened to the owner?”

Don’t know, it is possible he is in a mental heath care facility as he was in a depression due to the death of his wife.

I am not sure he will be charged with anything other than housing violations since he cooperated with the animal shelter and his own circumstances.

Glad to hear they are in reasonably good health — Shepherds are great dogs and should be able to share a complete and joy-filled life with their future owners.
Thank you for your kindness and hardwork in caring for God’s creatures.

Well i don’t necessarily mean physically chained up, but obviously being free of all that horrible fur must be wonderful for the dog.

I think the next picture in the series showed a woman bringing out a dog that looked to have all sorts of horrible things caked to its fur. That makes me sad to see that.

I knew a guy a while back in New Orleans named Dave. Something was not right with him mentally, could easily see this by looking at his house.

he had two small dogs that lived with him, and he let them mess in the house, and he never picked it up. The situation was so bad that when he went to sleep at night, he laid down, put his sleeping bag over him, then put newspaper over the sleeping bag in case the dogs went on him...

One of the dogs had eaten off all its fur from mid back all the way to the end, basically wherever it could reach its muzzle, it had no fur.

He also had a number of cats in cages. I can’t recall how many, but at least five. They never left their cages. He put a layer of newspaper down, then messed it, he covered it with a new layer, and it built up like that. He never changed it out. These cats when I first saw them were on top of about maybe two feet of piled up newspaper, layered with feces and urine, and they basically had the top 1/3 of the cage to dwell in.

You could smell this situation as soon as you pulled up to his house at the curb on the street. Like it would overwhelm.

So he was apparently an animal hoarder. I only knew this guy for about three months or so before it became apparent that he was crazy. Seems like animal hoarding goes along with some sort of other mental illness.

All I ever knew of his situation was that he had some girl, things went wrong, she left, and he felt like he didn’t deserve anything after that, so his life spiraled downward.

Very sad for the animals involved. I probably should have reported that, but I didn’t.

This was not “cut off”. This is undercoat - plucking it out. These dogs produce tons of soft undercoat that “blows” every 6 months (for about a month), but to get it gone ASAP requires frequent plucking. I imagine they hit him at the end of a cycle wherein his coat was only “naturally” coming out.

Believe me, you can get TONS of undercoat every day during the cycle that piles up hugely if you pluck it to help it along. Requires doing it in the back yard, preferably. Horrendous mess.

“Say what you will about the person who had them previously (he had mental limitations), but he really treated his dogs with love as demonstrated in their sweet dispositions”

I’m glad this person had the decency to state this. Didn’t know (but not surprised) about alleged “mental” problems.

I actually don’t believe in pure “environment” reasoning for character, but given there is a huge sampling here of 38 dogs, to have them almost all be of good personality speaks somewhat well of the owner. (If it was only 3 dogs, e.g., I’d say it could be luck of genetics.)

Another article. The 17 or 18 that are at the rescue will need extra love and care before being able to be adopted. One of the reasons I would love to go to alaska is having a dog team!

Anyway, another article...

Others are going to different rescue groups but these smoochy poochies have a hard road ahead.
