A total of 38 German shepherds were impounded April 4 from a single household by the Devore animal shelter. All the dogs were released to the shelter on April 7.
Because only two of the impounded German shepherds were deemed adoptable to the public, the German Shepherd Rescue of Orange County stepped up and took 18 of them last week. This week the rescue picked up seven more. Four more were picked up by two other German shepherd rescues and a chihuahua, the lone non-GSD, was picked up by our rescue and will be sent to a small dog rescue. The rest are in no danger, just waiting for more funds and room at the boarding kennels.
The good news is the dogs were well fed, friendly to people and dogs, and outwardly in good health. The bad news is these dogs are covered in filth and feces, unlikely to have visited the veterinarians office with any frequency, not walked on a leash or rode in a car, and in need of socialization. They will be put up for adoption once they are cleaned up, groomed, checked out by the vet, and evaluated for socialization.

this one made me smile :)
What happened to the owner?
Glad to hear they are in reasonably good health — Shepherds are great dogs and should be able to share a complete and joy-filled life with their future owners.
Thank you for your kindness and hardwork in caring for God’s creatures.
Things are looking positive for this sad situation. Happy to hear about the progress.
This is a low-volume list so dont worry!

“Say what you will about the person who had them previously (he had mental limitations), but he really treated his dogs with love as demonstrated in their sweet dispositions”
I’m glad this person had the decency to state this. Didn’t know (but not surprised) about alleged “mental” problems.
I actually don’t believe in pure “environment” reasoning for character, but given there is a huge sampling here of 38 dogs, to have them almost all be of good personality speaks somewhat well of the owner. (If it was only 3 dogs, e.g., I’d say it could be luck of genetics.)
Another article. The 17 or 18 that are at the rescue will need extra love and care before being able to be adopted. One of the reasons I would love to go to alaska is having a dog team!
Anyway, another article...
Others are going to different rescue groups but these smoochy poochies have a hard road ahead.
Update:
All of the 38 dogs taken from the residence in Highland last week have left the Devore shelter with rescue groups!
A big salute to German Shepherd Rescue of Orange County (25 dogs!), Ginger’s Pet Rescue, House of Shepherds of Corona, Westside German Shepherd Rescue, and The Pet Rescue Center for making this happen.
Please support your local rescues.
