Dogs have been man's best friend for up to 40,000 years, suggests new research. The study shows dogs' special relationship with humans might date back 27,000 to 40,000 years. The findings, published in the journal Current Biology, come from genomic analysis of an ancient Taimyr wolf bone.

That’s pretty good considering man has only been in existence for a little over 6000 yrs.

The difference between a dog and a cat

A dog will guard your dead body

A cat will eat your dead body

I will tell my Pit-Shepherd mix “Get Out of the Kitchen!”

And she will go 2 inches over the door threshold into the dining room and plop herself down.

Only thing is....I’ve never taught her where the kitchen begins and ends.

Cats were never domesticated.

If you were half as big as you are and your cat was twice as big as he is, you would not be “the owner”.

You would be “the lunch”.

If you want to know who loves you more, lock your wife and your dog in the trunk of your car overnight. When you let them out in the morning see which of the two is happiest to see you.

You are absolutely right about how much language they understand. They are even able to initiate conversations.

My dog will tell me:

Get up! Get up, dammit, I gotta go outside.

The guy with the Chinese food delivery is here. I want my fortune cookie.

And many more commands which I have been trained to obey. She has learned that I am sometimes slow to understand, so the commands are repeated clearly and often until a lightbulb goes off in my head.

I am rewarded whenever I obey with her unrestrained joy at my intelligence.

It’s a dog’s life to care and train their human.

"For instance when I point at something, the dog looks for what I’m pointing at rather than at my hand."

You're correct. Our closest non-human relative, the chimpanzee cannot do that.

Yup.

I was married three times and I tell friends that one of the major differences I saw between my wives and my dogs was that the later I got home at night, the happier the dogs were to see me.

A dog can learn hundreds of human words but none of us truly knows what their barks are saying.

Kinda humbling.
