A complete Neandertal mtDNA genome

Green et al. 2008 Wrote:

Analysis of the assembled sequence unequivocally establishes that the Neandertal mtDNA falls outside the variation of extant human mtDNAs, and allows an estimate of the divergence date between the two mtDNA lineages of 660,000 ± 140,000 years.

The Neandertal Enigma
by James Shreeve
Frayer's own reading of the record reveals a number of overlooked traits that clearly and specifically link the Neandertals to the Cro-Magnons. One such trait is the shape of the opening of the nerve canal in the lower jaw, a spot where dentists often give a pain-blocking injection. In many Neandertal, the upper portion of the opening is covered by a broad bony ridge, a curious feature also carried by a significant number of Cro-Magnons. But none of the alleged 'ancestors of us all' fossils from Africa have it, and it is extremely rare in modern people outside Europe." [pp 126-127]

For that Neanderthal to become a member of the US Senate, denotes terrible leadership in the Republican party.

I'm still working on Jonah swallowing the whale. Or was that the whale swallowing Jonah? I know there was some swallowing going on.

Some here will not take lightly to the implication that there have been separate species of humans.

Am I reading this correctly.....

extremely rare outside Europe......yet in Europe.....where in Europe so they find this plate?

So that means that Neanderthal genes are still carried in Europe. I think I dated him in college. There was a great deal of pubescence....

So far the genetics have come down firmly on the side of Neanderthals and Modern Humans being separate species. I wonder how long the folks relying on morphology to bolster the idea of same species can hold out?

Here is one of the mtDNA genomes from a Neanderthal http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/viewer.fcgi?db=nuccore&id=195972535 and one from a human http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/viewer.fcgi?db=nuccore&id=195592947

they are very similar

They could have just done a blood-draw on this fellow to get Neanderthal DNA.

No, they need a more recent corpse to get viable DNA.
