This past year will be remembered as the year that freedom of speech (or the lack thereof) on U.S. campuses became international news. Even President Barack Obama felt compelled to comment on the issue (three separate times). Although those of us who have worked for years on the frontlines defending freedom of speech on campus think the media was a little late to the story, we can all agree that last year was an especially contentious one.

What started out as a awkward conversation between 13-year-old Drew Breton and his mother about him being suspended from school for fighting, has turned into a viral video on social media giving millions a front row seat to bullying. His mother, 42-year-old Kimberly Breton said that until the video surfaced she was skeptical about what exactly happened. "He told me what happened the day before but then the next day he came home off the bus and said he was suspended," said Breton. Breton said the bullying incident initially took place on November 4th at Semmes Middle School in Mobile...

As ABC 10 News reports, the incident occurred in the cafeteria of Silver Trail Middle School in Pembroke Pines, Florida. Asked by a friend if she would share her peach, the girl used a knife from her lunchbox to cut the fruit in half. Shortly after, she found herself in the principal's office, being coined a “threat” to her fellow students. School officials say the honor roll student violated a district rule by bringing the knife to school. Her parents, however, find it nonsensical that their daughter's small, dull butter knife qualifies as a “weapon.” Andrea Souto, the girl's mother,...

Hey everyone, sorry if people think this is a vanity but I think people need to watch this because like as not this will be happening in schools all over the nation. There is no doubt in my mind that your kid could face 2 weeks detention even expulsion for saying something like, "Caitlyn Jenner is not a Hero." When I went to school, people also got in trouble for less. You were more likely to get detention or suspension for praying over your meal than giving the Hitler salute. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jtxym6orSNc SEASON 19 EPISODE 1 STUNNING AND BRAVE

Thaddeus Pryor, a junior at Colorado College, was barred from stepping foot on campus for six months for a social media post, the Colorado Springs Gazette reported. On the social media app Yik Yak, a post read "#blackwomenmatter." Pryor responded with, "They matter, they're just not hot." Pryor says he immediately regretted his remark. “I was ashamed, because some people were clearly upset,” Pryor told The College Fix. “So I deleted it.” But the damage had already been done. The next day the student center was filled with banners of many of the racial comments posted to Yik Yak —...

14-year-old "Clock Boy" Ahmed Mohamed has nothing on 5-year-old "Dandelion Boy" Drew Johnson. Hands down, Johnson is the real victim of our politically correct culture. Clock Boy has achieved global notoriety on par with Cecil the lion whereas few Americans have heard the story of Dandelion Boy: Indiana kindergartner Drew Johnson of Cumberland Elementary School. Today I'll utilize Dandelion Boy's story to explain a trend in American public schools and playgrounds that threatens your child's long-term psychological development. Johnson is now a freshman in high school, but several years ago he was on the front lines of what is today...

This week we celebrated Veterans Day, and social media has been filled with stories, pictures and expressions of deep appreciation for those who have served their country. Our armed forces are the very embodiment of love, service and real diversity: men and women, of all races and ethnicities, who practice any number of religions (or none). We thank those who survived and remember those who did not. Against this noble backdrop, we have also seen the Pageant of Petulant Children and their Tempest-in-a-Teapot Tantrums play out on college campuses, most notably and recently (but by no means exclusively) at the...

The school was cleared shortly before 3 p.m. and students were dismissed.

OVIEDO, Fla. - The family of a girl who was given detention for hugging a classmate has hired an attorney. In a press release from the attorney's office, Morgan & Morgan, Matt Morgan said the law firm was hired to help raise awareness. The incident happened Monday at Jackson Heights Middle School in Oviedo. "I'm definitely hoping that we're bringing light to this subject," said Kathy Fishbough, whose daughter, Ella, was issued the detention. "I really didn't expect this." Morgan said he believes there may be policies in place that discourage children from being kind to one another. "According to...

HENRICO COUNTY, Va. -- A 14-year old girl could be charged with assault and battery after she threw a baby carrot at one of her former teachers. "I don't even know how to combat the stupidity," Karrie May, whose 14-year-old daughter Aliya is currently suspended for launching the vegetable, said. May said her daughter has been out of school for a month. "I don't understand this,” May said. “Yes, it happened, and I can see a couple...

Pot may be legal in Colorado, but you can still be fired for using it. The state Supreme Court ruled 6-0 Monday that a medical marijuana patient who was fired after failing a drug test cannot get his job back. The case was being watched closely by employers and pot smokers in states that have legalized medical or recreational marijuana. Colorado became at least the fourth state in which courts have ruled against medical marijuana patients fired for pot use. Supreme courts in California, Montana and Washington state have made similar rulings, and federal courts in Colorado and Michigan also...

In 2013, a seven year old student was suspended from school for chewing a pop-tart in the vague shape of a gun.   The story struck a nerve, and made national news.    Glen Harlan Reynolds, in a USA Today article, noted that students were suspended for even more ridiculous "offenses".  From usatoday.com: Meanwhile, a 5-year-old girl was charged with "terroristic threats" for talking about her pink toy gun that shoots . . . bubbles. The school suspended her for 10 days and required a psychological evaluation. And in Maryland, boys were suspended for playing cops and robbers and using their fingers...
