The state Department of Transportation will “follow the lead” of the city and rename the Yawkey commuter rail station — as some lawmakers have advocated — if Boston officials ultimately rebrand nearby Yawkey Way, a MassDOT spokeswoman said. State transportation officials say they aren’t “actively exploring or considering” renaming Yawkey Station amid a debate over its controversial namesake, former Red Sox owner Tom Yawkey.

The Red Sox have had enough. At a moment when racial tensions have escalated rapidly and the removal of Confederate statues acts as a flashpoint for violent and racially divisive protests, the Red Sox are ready to start taking down a symbol of their own racially tainted history.

The Boston Herald’s Michael Silverman reports that Red Sox owner John Henry is “haunted” by the racist past of previous owner Tom Yawkey and wants to rename Yawkey Way, the tw0-block street that runs from Brookline Avenue to Boylston Street.
