Pictured on today’s front page are soldiers from the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, commanded by Col. Robert F. Sink. They just completed a 115-mile forced march from Camp Toccoa to Atlanta, a record “unparalleled in continental American history,” according to Sink (who also marched). 2nd Lt. Richard Winters of Company E, 2nd Battalion (better known as “Easy” Company, portrayed on the HBO mini-series “Band of Brothers”) is among the men, having graduated from Officer Candidate School in July. Wagner, once the youngest lieutenant colonel in the service, became the Army Air Force's first ace on Dec. 16, 1941 over the Philippines. Searchers have located the wrecks of five B-24 bombers that crashed into the Adriatic Sea during World War II, three of which are associated with 23 still-missing crew members. The search mission – conducted over a two-week period in August off the coast of Croatia – was a partnership between Project Recover and the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency. CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — A West Virginia soldier killed during World War II has been accounted for, the military said. Army Cpl. Joseph H. Gunnoe, 21, of Charleston, was reported missing in action in November 1944 in Germany. He was declared killed in action after the war, the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency said Tuesday. Gunnoe was assigned to Company G, 112th Infantry Regiment, 28th Infantry Division.
