(Mystic-WTNH, Aug. 29, 2003 4:55 PM) _ Soon students will be getting ready for their first round of exams. But some doctors say perhaps the most important exam should be done at the start of the school year. It's en eye exam. 13-year-old Jessica Berg is getting her eyes checked at Visions Sight and Learning Center in Mystic. Her mom says it's all about being prepared for the upcoming school year. "I wanted a second opinion for my oldest daughter because she was having trouble with comprehension at school last year and I wanted to make sure this year we...

I haven't read the Gehman Report on the Columbia accident in its entirety, though I've skimmed the whole thing, treading lightly on parts with which I'm already (unfortunately) all too familiar. These included the history of manned space flight in the U.S., and the specific technical description of what went wrong. The latter, in fact, is almost irrelevant to policy formulation per se — it's only of importance to those at NASA who have to implement specific technical fixes. In any event, I've read enough to know that there's little new here, to anyone who's followed the vagaries of...

Hillary's fascist vision for AmericaJames Henry BrookesNews.Com Thursday 28 August 2003 Nearly five years ago I wrote of the Clinton's fascist vision for America. The dreadful possibility of Hillary becoming president has forced me to revisit the subject. The state of American education being what it is, the vast majority of people are totally incapable of recognising a fascist economic program, even when it is used to slap them in the face. This is because they have not been taught that fascism means state direction of the economy, cradle to grave 'social security', complete control of education, government intervention in...

After 43 years of blindness, Michael May can see again. HE CAN play soccer with his sons, enjoy movies and, for the first time, gaze on the Sierra Nevada slopes he has expertly skied — sightless — since the late 1970s. But May can’t recognize his sons, Carson, 11, and Wyndham, 9, by their faces alone. The same goes for identifying Jennifer, his wife of 15 years. People “can’t fathom that,” said May, who owns a company in Davis, Calif., that makes navigational software for the blind. Three years after surgery restored sight to May’s right eye, researchers say May’s...

EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP, N.J. -- A scanner the government is testing for airport screening reveals too much more than meets the eye to be comfortable for most passengers.

Susan Hallowell, director of the Transportation Security Administration's security laboratory, sacrificed a large measure of her own modesty Wednesday to demonstrate the problem.

She stepped into a metal booth that bounced X-rays off her skin to produce a black-and-white image that revealed enough to produce a world-class blush.

Thursday, June 19, 2003 'Right now, the company is working some of the people six and seven days a week' Union members at ITT seek change in overtime policy By DUNCAN ADAMS THE ROANOKE TIMES A mandatory overtime policy sent union officials and ITT Night Vision management to the negotiating table last month. During the famous "Bread and Roses" strike in 1912, textile workers in Lawrence, Mass., fought both for increased pay and a chance to enjoy the finer things of life. More than 90 years later, union members at ITT Night Vision in Roanoke County are prepared to walk...

On June 24, 2002 President George Bush presented his vision of the Middle East in which he saw two states, Israel and Palestine, and emphasized how necessary it is for the new state to be viable. Since then, in almost every speech about the region, Bush has emphasized this need for viability. After all, a state that from the outset lacks the conditions for viability will only bring trouble on itself and its neighbors. Earlier this week Secretary of State Colin Powell visited Israel and in a surprising and original statement, said settlements detract from the viability of this future...

This is a wonderful thing! I had cornea transplant Wednesday morning at Swedish Hospital in Seattle, Dr. Tom Gillette presiding. Known to those who have them as a "T," transplant went well, general anaesthetic has worn off to a major extent. Eyelid is somewhat swollen, requiring cold compresses, and eyeball feels like a small cat is occasionaly scratching it. But I'm functioning again and feeling very energetic. The T eye is blurry, however, and return of good vision can take from two weeks to two years. Please pray for return of good vision in my right eye soon. Yours for...

WASHINGTON — The shakeup came suddenly. Late Friday, Secretary of the Army Thomas E. White abruptly resigned without explanation after a meeting with Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld and his deputy, Paul Wolfowitz. White's departure and the coming retirements of Army Chief of Staff Gen. Eric K. Shinseki and Vice Chief of Staff Gen. John Keane will clear the way for Rumsfeld to install his own handpicked Army leaders and put his stamp on the Army's force structure, doctrine and training. Pentagon officials told Knight Ridder that Rumsfeld plans to offer the Army chief of staff job to Gen. Tommy...

"Mad as the sea and wind when both contend." -- Hamlet "They're talking apples and oranges!" is a familiar frustrated cry from bystanders listening to a furious discussion. It means that while the two sides seem to be arguing about the same thing, they probably aren't. For example, when Democrats in Congress denounce the "unacceptable costs" of President Bush's tax cut proposal, the Democrats are stating their belief that government would be negligent in its duties if it allowed a reduction in the flow of money to Washington --money which the Democrats confidently believe they spend wisely to create and...

Commentary by National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice Sent to Black Media by Project 21 For Release: April 17, 2003 Contact: David Almasi at 202/371-1400 x106 Observations on faith and freedom made by National Security Advisor Dr. Condoleezza Rice at the National Prayer Breakfast in Washington, D.C. this past February are being circulated to the black media as a New Visions Commentary by the African-American leadership network Project 21. While Dr. Rice's remarks were initially re-released to coincide with the observance of Easter, her comments are increasingly poignant now since American military forces have led the liberation of Iraq. "Our cherished...

THE DRAMA OF YOUR PRESENT SITUATION by Stephen Hanson(inhistruthprophet@earthlink.net) HERE:http://www.angelfire.com/in/HisTruth The Lord showed me a series of visions below and gave me an interpretation of some of the events that have been playing out in the political arena that we have all been aware of. These are serious times that we now live in and the drama that plays out in it will usher in many of the events that are mentioned in the book of Revelation I believe. While this brings forth some heavy things, we need to continue to trust that God will see us through and...

My Dogs Watch FoxNewsby Paul Gottfried This morning, when I turned on FoxNews for our three dogs, who seem to like the staccato sounds on Rupert Murdoch Central, I caught sight of the well-publicized visage of David Frum. Apparently Frum was being asked to comment on the Christian faith of George W. Bush, a spiritual disposition that had just received high grades from an Evangelical Republican who was particularly struck by the Prez's remarks about everyone having the potential for democracy. Frum, who was in agreement with the Evangelical, spoke about how effusively Bush's faith had come out in his...

INDIANAPOLIS - Technology that astronomers developed to take the twinkle out of starlight as it enters their telescopes is now peering in the opposite direction, revealing the eye's complexities as never before. Scientists hope the detailed images of light-gathering cells they can now see will lead to early diagnoses and treatment of eye diseases to spare patients from blindness. The same system of lenses, flexible mirrors and computers is also making laser eye surgery more accurate. One day it may even allow surgeons to user lasers to zap away tiny aneurisms within the eye. "The real breakthrough is the work...

SACRAMENTO(AP) - Now that the lights are on, Californians' attentions have turned to other pressing matters, such as education, budget cuts and commuter-clogged highways. Though millions of customers are on the hook for tens of billions of dollars of the state's power buying debt, energy concerns have made barely a ripple in the governor's race.

I have recently failed an eye exam and must have my vision corrected. I've decided to get contacts lenses, but I'm not sure whether to get soft or Rigid Gas Permeable lenses. I've done some research into the subject, and from what I've read, Rigid Gas Permeable(Oxygen Permeable) lenses are a good choice, especially since they are supposed to slow the progression of myopia. All the literature I've read about them does point out that they require a two-week period of adaptation, and that they may not be for everyone. Could any Freepers tell me of their experiences with contacts...

The Other Side Hollie L. Moody (August 18th, 2002) I was in the Spirit and found myself with the Lord beside a large body of water. The sun was shining and I felt that it was the middle of the day. There was a small, but sturdy looking, wooden ship pulled up on the sand next to the Lord and I. I watched as the Lord pushed the boat into the shallows and stepped into it. He then held His right hand out to me. "Come with Me to the other side," the Lord said to me. I placed my...

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak's statement about Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat's abilities and future crossed a line that has never before been crossed. Mubarak said in an interview to the New York Times that as long as the conflict was in the hands of Arafat and Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, it was difficult to see any solution without active involvement by the United States, adding that it was possible Arafat would name himself symbolic president about a year after a Palestinian state was declared. Mubarak is not known for mincing his words, and he's been even blunter in the past...
