It might be the best-studied of all our senses, but surprises about the way our vision works just keep on coming. Recent research has startling and also salutary lessons about how we see. Your brain makes up a lot of what you “see” Whether you’re walking around or sitting at a desk, you no doubt feel that you can see pretty clearly all around you. Yes, so you might be looking ahead as you walk through a park, say, but you can see a rich world of grass, trees and people to either side of you. Well, you might be...

I’ve been missing the vast amount of information on prepping, survival, camping, simple cooking, the old ways of doing just about everything – all the things nw_arizona_granny knew so much about and shared with us, along with numerous other posters with a vast array of skills and knowledge. We have our various related-threads here, a recipe thread, a gardening thread, and even a prepper thread. They are all great and I don’t mean to take anything away from those and the hard work their owners put in. But I was missing a place to talk about ALL those things, to...

This is the great mystery of human vision: Vivid pictures of the world appear before our mind’s eye, yet the brain’s visual system receives very little information from the world itself. Much of what we “see” we conjure in our heads. “A lot of the things you think you see you’re actually making up,” said Lai-Sang Young, a mathematician at New York University. “You don’t actually see them.” New research suggests mathematics is the key. The visual cortex has a mind of its own. “You may think of the brain as taking a photograph of what you see in your...

Never seen him like this, amazing. Incredible television. A brutal torrent of fresh air truth. Am I wrong, 30+ minutes without a commercial? Watch a replay if you can. Historic times in America.

Most people are aware of the famous vision seen by Constantine the Great of a cross in the sky with the words, "In hoc signo, vinces" — by this sign you will conquer. Having seen this miraculous vision, Constantine would cause his soldiers to march under Christian symbols, be victorious in his wars, and eventually convert to Christianity. Many citizens of the Roman Empire would follow him. But not all. During the reign of Constantine's sons, paganism continued to be practiced throughout the empire. Indeed, thanks to the weak rule and the rumored personal scandals of Constans, a pagan usurper...

By injecting specialized light-tweaking nanoparticles into a mouse’s retina, that mouse is suddenly and clearly able to perceive near-infrared light — suggesting the same could be possible for us, assuming you don’t mind a needle in the eye. The advance involves what the researchers, from the University of Science and Technology in China, call “ocular injectable photoreceptor-binding upconversion nanoparticles.” In fact, it turns out that these researchers had already created the necessary trickery for a different reason, namely as a molecule for optogenetic triggers that would absorb infrared light (which conveniently penetrates many tissues) and emit visible spectrum light instead....

Obama said during an interview with David Axelrod: “I think what’s unique about America is our aspirations to be a large, successful, multi-racial, multi-cultural, multi-ethnic, multi-religious, pluralistic democracy.” When asked if he believes Trump shares that vision, Obama replied, “No, obviously not.”

I have pending cataract surgery in a days time. Being told to pay an extra $1000 for a toric lense to correct 1.19 astigmatism. No insurance or benefit will cover as this can be accomplished with normal glasses. I don't think I will tell the difference, because when we use $1 readers and I have done so for 20 years, there is no astigmatism correction present. My eye exams going back years show me at a 1.00 astig. level for years and years. So why bother at this level 1.19 of concern ? Any freepers please comment. Really want to...

If you have been wearing glasses for years, like me, it can be surprising to discover that you perceive the world thanks to a few giant companies that you have never heard of. Worrying about the fraying edge of motorway lights at night, or words that slide on the page, and occasionally spending a fortune at the opticians is, for many of us, enough to think about. And spectacles are unusual things. It is hard to think of another object in our society which is both a medical device that you don’t want and a fashion accessory which you do....

Lou Tomososki was a high school teen in 1962 when his science teacher told the class about a solar eclipse that was going to take place that afternoon, NBC affiliate KGW reported. Tomososki and a friend viewed the partial eclipse outside Marshall High School in Portland. "The sun at that time, at 3:30 p.m., was in the one o’clock position," said Tomososki. "I said to Roger, 'If you stare at it long enough the brightness goes away.'" By that night, both Tomososki and Roger were having vision problems. He said the vision problems never got any worse — but they...

The private jet industry is highly competitive, one in which companies will utilize any advantage to maintain existing clients while also luring in new ones. Which makes the fact that Cirrus — a Duluth, Minn.-based aviation company — has come out with the world's most affordable private jet something that will turn heads in the industry. After roughly a decade of development, Cirrus is beginning to deliver their first batch of SF50 Vision Jets to the more than 600 customers who were the first to purchase them (the inaugural plane arrived in Switzerland around mid-May of this year). The company...

An experimental drug is showing promise against an untreatable eye disease that blinds older adults — and intriguingly, it seems to work in patients who carry a particular gene flaw that fuels the damage to their vision. Age-related macular degeneration, or AMD, is the leading cause of vision loss among seniors, gradually eroding crucial central vision. There are different forms but more than 5 million people worldwide, and a million in the U.S., have an advanced type of so-called "dry" macular degeneration that has no treatment. First patients may notice blurriness when they look straight ahead. Eventually many develop blank...

One of the many holes in the “social contract” theory of government is that the power of the state is so often harnessed by interest groups to protect themselves against competition. Nobody ever agreed to that, but it happens all the time, inflicting losses on the consuming public. A recent instance of this is the aggressive lobbying campaign being waged by the American Optometric Association (AOA) against innovations that now make it possible for Americans to get accurate eye exams and lens prescriptions over the Internet. By using such innovations, millions of Americans who need vision correction could save substantial...

To say Isaac Lidsky has an impressive resume would be a massive understatement. A child actor from Saved by the Bell: The New Class, Lidsky graduated Harvard at 19 and then clerked for Sandra Day O’Conner and Ruth Bader Ginsburg. He then started his own tech company which sold for $230 million. By any measure, his accomplishments have been remarkable — even without the knowledge that he’s blind. Lidsky’s lost his sight as a teenager — a curse that ultimately transformed his view on life. “Sight is this masterful illusion,” Lidsky said. “And as that illusion sort of shattered for...

....The lens surgery helps readjust the nerve signals in the brain to access the remaining healthy parts of retina. The Eyemax Mono technology will be introduced to UK surgeons at the Royal College of Ophthalmologists annual meeting in Liverpool next month. More than 5,000 surgeons from around the world have already asked for the technology. The procedure, which can take up to five minutes but which was achieved in just 60 seconds with June, will be made available to eye surgeons across the UK and ....

Scientists are on the brink of restoring sight to the blind by sending moving images directly to the brain. In a world-first, surgeons have implanted a visual stimulator chip in the brain of a 30-year-old woman. The patient, who has been totally blind for seven years, saw coloured flashes, lines and spots when signals were sent to her brain from a computer. Her doctors are now planning to send footage from a tiny video camera to the brain, which could provide the world’s first bionic eye and restore sight to millions. The technology bypasses the eyes, meaning it has the...

We have been waiting patiently, for over two years, for a moment, a very specific moment, when it was possible to confirm previous suspicions. Today is that day. What outlines below is clear and convincing evidence the 2012 health event of Hillary Clinton resulted in a permanent compromise to Hillary Clinton’s vision. What is outlined below is why some seemingly innocuous notations can reconcile. We’ll also explain why the Clinton team cannot reveal the reality. Back in October of 2012 the Hillary Clinton health story began around a cold, which became a flu, which became a slip and fall, which...

PARIS (Reuters) - German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Francois Hollande said on Thursday that it was crucial an upcoming European Union summit, the first since Britain voted to leave the bloc, addressed the EU's weaknesses with a plan for reforms. Britain's Brexit vote sent shockwaves through the European Unions long deemed by many voters to be overly bureaucratic and unresponsive to their concerns, while energizing the continent's anti-immigration, eurosceptic parties. "It is now about applying an agenda for Bratislava that makes clear we are determined to react together to the weaknesses, to the tasks we face," Merkel told...

Right now it's all working well enough for him as people are...
