BERKELEY - Mayor Tom Bates is trying to work out a compromise that will allow Berkeley's Veterans Day memorial ceremony to go on as scheduled Nov. 11. The volunteer committee organizing the event had split over a proposal by the chairman, singer/songwriter Country Joe McDonald, to invite Bill Mitchell, a co-founder of Cindy Sheehan's organization, Gold Star Families for Peace, to be the keynote speaker.
