PORTSMOUTH - For many Americans, the night wasn’t complete without a visit from Johnny, Ed, Doc and Tommy, aka “Mr. Excitement.” Tommy Newsom, a Portsmouth native who gained fame as a musical sidekick to Johnny Carson for nearly 30 years, died Saturday of cancer.
