But now, REI is hoping to capitalize on the idea that a lot of people are turned off by holiday shopping around Thanksgiving. A former Kentucky police officer is suing a local gun store after he shot his finger off inside the store in a case of bad gun handling vs. horrible gun handling – plus a complete lack of personal responsibility. According to a civil lawsuit, former Glasgow police officer Darrell Smith went to Barren Outdoors and asked to see a .380 caliber handgun. An employee removed the gun from under the counter and handed it to Smith without checking to see if the gun was loaded. So, one of the Christmas presents I got for my wife is a wax warmer. My 6-year-old son was walking through the living room today as I was moving it and he asked, "Daddy, where did you get that for Mommy?" So I said, "What, this?" "Yes." "At the store." "Oh." He walked a little further and asked, "What store?" And I said, "A store that sells these." "Oh, okay!" and he walked off completely satisfied. My wife, who had been reading on the couch, began to laugh and said, "What kind of conversation was that?!" And I jokingly replied,...

More than 90% — ninety percent! — of Americans throw out food prematurely, as TIME reported last week. Basically, consumers are confused by phrasing like “use by” and “sell by” and so, to be safe, they end up tossing perfectly good produce, snacks and more. In reality, food dating really just indicates when an item is at its peak freshness, not when it becomes inedible. All of this got Doug Rauch, the former president of the Trader Joe’s supermarket chain, thinking about a potential solution. And now, it seems he might have found one: a market that specializes in preparing...

When the Seattle City Council unanimously passed a ban on plastic bags and required businesses to charge a nickel for paper bags, city leaders believed it would be better all around. "I think we've gotten to a place where it's really going to work for the environment, businesses and the community in general," Councilman Mike O'Brien said at the time. But the bag ban is contributing to thousands of dollars in losses for at least one Seattle grocery store, and questions have been raised about the risk of food-borne illness from reusable bags that shoppers don't often wash.

Yesterday I decided to head-out and get a bit more ammo before the Obama and his congressional minions had a chance to impose more regulation and/or bans... Luckily, I picked up 8mm, .357, and 12-gauge shells, and after a considerable wait in line it was my turn to pay. So then the cashier says 'strip down, facing me.' I couldn't believe it- all I could think was 'this time these pinheads in Congress have gone WAY too far...' Making a mental note to complain to the manager about the gun registry people running amok, I did just as she had instructed....
