State lawmakers recently introduced a bill that would grant $1,200 stimulus checks to illegal immigrants, who were ineligible for the federal tax credits that most Massachusetts residents received. There’s little question that illegal immigrants are struggling during this pandemic. They tend to hold the worst-paid and least-secure jobs in our society. And they’re frequently subject to abuse and discrimination by unscrupulous employers. But rewarding them for violating our laws would be a terrible use of taxpayers’ money.
