The dirt track spectacle hearkens back to the origins of NASCAR — moonshine runners attempting to outrun the law in rural Appalachia.Stock car racing is about to get very dirty. On Sunday, NASCAR’s Cup series will race on a dirt track created at the famed Bristol Motor Speedway. While the sport’s truck series ran one dirt race a year from 2013 to 2019 (lockdowns canceled last year’s event), Sunday’s feature represents the first time the sport’s premier series has raced on dirt since September 1970 — a race won by stock car racing’s “king,” Richard Petty.Bristol TransformedThe race this coming weekend,...

A federal appeals court on Monday gave NASCAR a huge victory in the racing organization's ongoing battle with AT&T. In a reversal of a lower court's decision, the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Atlanta ruled that AT&T doesn't have the right to sue NASCAR over a sponsorship disagreement. The upshot: NASCAR is close to being able to require that AT&T logos be stripped from the No. 31 car, which is driven by Jeff Burton. That finding is a big switch from May, when Judge Marvin Shoob of U.S. District Court in Atlanta granted AT&T a preliminary injunction that...

HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. -- There is a story NASCAR insiders swear is true and claim is not an isolated case. A few years back at a Ford dealership outside Harrisonburg, Va., two men in their late 20s walked in on a Monday morning and started asking about a certain model of Taurus. They were neatly dressed, appeared to be sober, sane and serious. And soon, their focus became clear: They found stock car racing exciting and thought they would buy a car to join the fun. If only it were that easy. Veteran driver Mark Martin once described the difference between...
  • NASCAR Lessons for Democrats

It is received wisdom that the Democrats cannot regain the Presidency unless they can win the votes of “NASCAR Dads.” Howard Dean’s demeaning phrase was “guys in pick-ups with Confederate flags.” But if the Democrats kiss off the whole South and most of the West, they are not going to see the inside of the White House without a visitor’s pass. Obviously, the Democrats need some NASCAR lessons. They have learned one lesson they shouldn’t have. Stock car races are run on oval tracks with the cars going counterclockwise. All drivers turn left at every opportunity. In racing, this choice...

Once again Kevin Harvick gets blamed for being willing to really race! The NASCAR web site says "Harvick caused wreck in qualifying race." I can tell you this anyone who says kevin was responsible for that wreck has never driven a race car. Think about it this way. If you are racing the kiddie go carts at the local track and you are following your buddy at a distance of about 6 inches or so what do you think is going to happen if your buddy lets his foot off of the gas pedal? Guess what... you just bumped into...
