Just wanted to get some feedback from experienced shingle sufferers and those who have opted for the vaccine. For the record, I got the first of a series of two shots a couple of weeks ago. More lingering soreness than with just about any other vaccine. Any reactions or did anyone suffer from shingles anyway?

Feedback on the new shingles vaccine? I usually lie low on medical treatment and don't go for 'the latest' treatment on much of anything. But then, I am healthy. Any feedback about this new vaccine? Side-effects? Avoid it? Go for it? Just collecting data here, thanks.

If approved, CDC officials said they’re likely to recommend the GSK vaccine over Merck’s shot. In the revaccination study, investigators found that Glaxo’s shot induces a strong immune response in people 50 and older who received Zostavax a minimum of 5 years before their Shingrix vaccination. Since previous studies have shown Zostavax’s...

A very close friend of mine has had a bout of Shingles for several weeks and finally went to the VA Hospital to get help. Shingles is a reactivation of the Chicken Pox that one might have had as a kid. It is the Herpes Zoster virus and it can damage nerves causing severe pain. He is 61 years old and he told me November last year that a visit to the VA for shoulder pain had him diagnosed for tendonitis. So he followed steps for gently exercising to restore his movement and he took Ibuprofen for the pain. He...

Hey Folks, I recently recovered from shingles.Still have a bit of nerve pain. I was very lucky and managed to avoid the worst through early intervention. I just want to encourage anyone out there who's had chicken pox to talk to their doctor about the shingles shot. You don't want to go through what I went through. This especially goes for my fellow "Boomers". Stress is one of the main triggers for shingles and we 50 somethings have a lot of stress. God bless you all and stay healthy.

It seems it is the time of year for this dread menace to appear. 3 older people in my church, me included have had a run in with it this month. Mine was minor, some of theirs were not. This is a repeating issue, especially in times of physical or mental stress. ANY ONE WHO HAS HAD CHICKEN POX, CAN AND WILL PROBABLY GET SHINGLES SOME TIME IN THEIR LIFE SPAN. IT IS A DORMANT SECONDARY INFECTION OF CHICKEN POX. If you have NOT had a SHINGLES VACCINE please consider getting one. As this is NOT a pleasant experience to...

Back with a vengeanceAthens, Ga. – Researchers at the University of Georgia and Yale University have discovered a compound with the potential to be more effective than existing agents in treating the very painful blisters known as shingles—a condition that affects up to 30 percent of Americans, mostly elderly, and for which no specific treatment exists. Most adults remember the fever, itchy blisters and possibly tiny scars they experienced as children when they had chickenpox, which is caused by the varicella-zoster virus, or VZV.Unfortunately, that memory can come back—with a vengeance—when they are older. The VZV virus from childhood chickenpox...

Shingles, a painful skin condition, may be prevented if you perform Tai-Chi, an ancient Chinese martial art, say researchers from the University of California, Los Angeles. Tai Chi is commonly used in many parts of the world as a low-impact exercise for older people. You can read about this new study in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, April issue. In this new study, researchers found that elderly people who performed Tai Chi enjoyed better immune responses against the shingles-causing virus, compared to people who just received health education. Shingles affects about one million people in the USA alone...

Is anyone else having trouble getting the new vaccination against shingles (Zostavax)? I started asking my doctor about it last fall when the CDC recommended it for most adults over age 60. The vaccination is expensive - - $150 to $200, but is good for several years. My pharmacy can get order one dose, but my doctor won't give me a prescription to bring to the pharmacy, where I guess I would pick up the vaccine - keep it frozen - - and then bring it to the doctor's office to get the injection. I am willing to pay for...

Hi- Need some help... My brother, Ray, is coming down with a case of shingles. From what I understand, it is pretty much Biblically Job-like, as a disease. Extremely painful. He doesn't have a rash yet, just a stabbing pain in one side of his back, and the skin is so sensitive, it hurts when clothes touch it. He has some accliver (sp?) coming today- an antiviral, but other than that, I would really appreciate any advice I can give to him. I think he caught it soon enough, before the really bad symptoms appear, to do some good. So...

ASSOCIATED PRESS WASHINGTON -- Federal health advisers endorsed a proposed vaccine on Thursday to help prevent shingles, an often-excruciating disease that afflicts as many as 1 million adults every year. The Food and Drug Administration's advisory panel on vaccines said the vaccine for shingles appeared to be safe and effective in people age 60 and older. However, panelists worried its effectiveness may not last, and said it appeared to be less effective in people over 80. The vaccine, Zostavax, was developed by Merck & Co., which sought to have it approved for use in people aged 50 and older. But...

An experimental vaccine can reduce both the incidence and the severity of shingles by more than half, doctors reported yesterday, in a development that could spare hundreds of thousands of elderly Americans from an extremely painful disease. The effectiveness of the vaccine was determined in an unusually large clinical trial involving more than 38,500 people over the age of 60, the group most prone to shingles, a skin and nerve infection. "I think the results are quite clinically significant," said Dr. Michael N. Oxman, the leader of the study, which is being published today in The New England Journal of...

PHILADELPHIA -- A new experimental vaccine cuts in half the chances of older people getting shingles, a blistering skin rash that can lead to months or years of intense pain. A study of more than 38,000 people aged 60 or older found that those who received the vaccine, made by Merck & Co., were 51 percent less likely to develop shingles. The vaccine also reduced the severity of sickness in people who got shingles, and cut by two-thirds the chances of developing longlasting nerve pain. The vaccine's reach could be huge, considering that shingles affects at least 1 million Americans...
