MSNBC host Andrea Mitchell fretted Friday that the FBI's acknowledged error in not following up on a credible trip on Nikolas Cruz might serve as fodder for critics of the Russia investigation. In a statement, the FBI said Friday that "protocols were not followed" after someone contacted the bureau's Public Access Line on Jan. 5 with concerns about Cruz, who authorities say confessed to carrying out the Florida school shooting this week. The individual provided information in January about Cruz's desire to kill people, erratic behavior, disturbing social media posts, and potential to carry out a school shooting. The FBI...

OK, we’ve got a confession to make: We’ve had David Hogg pegged all wrong. For months, we’ve been sharing his hot takes to illustrate his ignorance and obnoxiousness. But today, with this twist on Donald Trump’s ALL-CAPS tweet at Hassan Rouhani, he proved that he’s actually a genius:

To US President Trump: NEVER, EVER THREATEN THE UNITED STATES AGAIN OR YOU WILL SUFFER CONSEQUENCES THE LIKES OF WHICH FEW THROUGHOUT HISTORY HAVE EVER SUFFERED BEFORE. WE ARE NO LONGER A COUNTRY THAT WILL STAND FOR YOUR DEMENTED WORDS OF VIOLENCE & DEATH. BE CAUTIOUS!

Only 28 percent of young adults ages 18-29 say they are “absolutely certain” of voting in the 2018 midterm elections, according to a new survey. On the other hand, the Public Religion Research Institute (PPRI) and The Atlantic also found that 74 percent of seniors said they are “absolutely certain” about voting in the midterm elections, in what the survey-takers described as a “massive” generational gap in voting intent. Overall, half of Americans are “absolutely certain” about voting in the midterm elections, which is about the same compared to the 2014 midterm elections. According to the poll, young adults are...

Wexler retired from the Secret Service in 2014 after 27 years with the agency. ~~~~~~~~~~~ He had offered in the past to make security recommendations. The district “finally took me up on the offer” in December when a teacher on behalf of the school’s security committee asked him to conduct a “site survey” of the campus. Was school security sufficient? they wanted to know. ~~~~~~~~~~ He said he printed out details about the school: its floor plan, bell schedule and an aerial map. Then he arrived early for his meeting Dec. 13 and pulled his truck into the visitor’s parking...

U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson introduced legislation this week that would create a national gun registry. Known as the “Crime Gun Tracing Modernization Act,” the bill would require ATF to set up a “searchable, computerized database” of all records pertaining to the sale, importation, production or shipment of firearms. The agency would be given three years to get the system up and running. “The fact that there is a law on the books that forces agents to comb through millions of files by hand is absolutely ridiculous,” said Nelson, a Florida Democrat.

The Florida government did not conduct background checks on thousands of applicants for concealed weapons for a year because the state employee was unable to log into the system. According to a February 2016 investigative report from Florida’s Inspector General, first reported by the Tampa Bay Times, a state Division of Licensing employee identified as Lisa Wilde was unable to log into the system to actually complete these background checks. She never mitigated this issue. When determining eligibility for purchasing a firearm, applicants must undergo a background check known as the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS), which is...

In mid-February of 2014, two 17-year-old Marjory Stoneman Douglas students assaulted a 14-year-old baseball player near the high school stadium. They kicked the boy, a police report said, held him to the ground and simulated a sexual assault through the teen's clothing with a baseball bat. One of the assailants was Broward Sheriff Scott Israel's son, Brett Israel, according to the incident report. When the attack was reported to authorities, Brett Israel and the other 17-year-old, Anthony Broderick, were not arrested. They were suspended from the Parkland high school for three days based on the school's conclusion that they had...

The he Broward school district’s repeated, emphatic — and it turns out, false — statements that Nikolas Cruz had not been in a controversial disciplinary program fit a pattern of an institution on the defensive and under siege. Facing significant legal and political exposure over the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, the district has tried to keep information from the public and put out untrue and misleading statements, frustrating parents who say this is the time for maximum transparency.

Gun-control activist David Hogg now wants to stop elected politicians from speaking to the National Rifle Association. In a tweet Sunday, Mr. Hogg noted that he had signed a MoveOn.org petition to “Demand Mike Pence cancel his speech to the NRA convention on May 4.” The tweet to Mr. Hogg’s 777,000 Twitter followers links to a petition that makes a similar demand of Nick Ayers, the vice president’s chief of staff. It was unclear whether the threat from Mr. Hogg’s followers would discourage the vice president from going to the Dallas meeting.

I’ll keep this short. I’m against gun control. Why? We tried it in Australia. By punishing law abiding citizens, we empowered criminals. Australia was safer in the 1950s when guns were treated as tools. But I digress. Here’s another unique pro-gun argument made by the satirist P.J. O’Rourke in 2010’s Don’t Vote! It Just Encourages The B******s (page 165, if you must know): Gun ownership is crucial to the preservation of American freedoms. We may have to shoot Democrats. It happened in 1861 and it could happen again. Just kidding. Sort of. But there are other important arguments in favor...

I think David Hogg shares more than a passing resemblance to Audie Murphy, war hero. I think it would be a great meme about character or something, if somebody could do the honours.

Since the Parkland school shootings, police in Broward County have seized guns from private citizens more often than any county in Florida. As of Thursday, police had obtained 34 court orders under a new law that allows guns to be taken from people considered at risk of harming themselves or others.

Every time there is a mass shooting we get the same old song and dance from the gun control fanatics. You’re sorry this happened? Then you must institute gun control. Oh, you don’t want to do that? Then it’s your fault that it happened. The NRA is bad. They kill people. We must have gun control. Innocent law-abiding Americans are responsible. Don’t you feel bad for the victims? Then institute our gun control agenda that will do nothing to stop the killings. It’s hamhanded, relentless propaganda peddled by smug, self-righteous anti-gun zealots.Well, here are some things you don’t typically see...
