Reply to Eugene Debbs on Mass Importation of Labour into USA 1910 A Reply to Debs by Ernest Untermann Published in Social-Democratic Herald [Milwaukee, WI], Wisconsin Edition, vol. 13, no. 16, whole no. 629 (Aug. 20, 1910), pg. 2. A letter from Comrade Debs in the July issue of the International Socialist Review, assailing the majority of the Committee on Immigration and its report to the national convention of the Socialist Party [National Congress, Chicago, May 15-21, 1910], has been brought to my notice but recently. Comrade Debs calls our report "unsocialistic, reactionary, and in truth outrageous." He claims that...

Assad’s cleverly crafted narrative has for years gained acceptance from some DC policymakers, religious freedom communities, and Christian activists that my organization, In Defense of Christians, operates among. That is, he portrays himself as the protector of Syria’s Christians and other religious minorities, such as the Druzes, Yezidis, and his own Alawites, to name a few. In the face of the Islamic State scourge and many other Islamist rebels who despise Christians and other minorities, Assad was right. Christians were better off living in government-controlled areas and have stuck by, reluctantly, to his regime. But the narrative has quickly crumbled...

Rising optimism on the economy among racial minorities is boosting President Donald Trump’s chances in 2018, says a poll by Zogby Analytics. “Even though President Trump receives little support from these groups, things might be going just good enough economically that he can scrape enough support from these groups so that Republicans can retain control of Congress and Trump gets re-elected in 2020,” said the June 27 report by Zogby Analytics. The racial groups are vital to the Democratic Party’s elite-led raucous coalition of minorities, and any decline in their 2018 turnout could cripple Democrats’ hope of regaining power in...

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Austin supercentenarian and the nation's oldest living man, Richard Overton, is the victim of identity theft that left his bank account empty, family says. Someone used his account to purchase savings bonds with Treasury Direct, Richard's cousin Volma Overton Jr. said. He added that the purchases had been happening for a "couple of months." "It's a shock, it hurts, it hurts tremendously," he said. Volma discovered the account discrepancy when he deposited money into Richard's personal account, then went to the bank to check the balance. All that was in there was the money he had just...

Prankster and former Howard Stern personality John Melendez somehow managed to contact President Trump aboard Air Force One while pretending to be a sitting United States Senator. Melendez, host of “The Stuttering John” podcast, got through several layers of security to reach the president, who thought he was speaking to New Jersey Democratic Senator Bob Menendez when he eventually took the call. And while the conversation revealed the president being polite, friendly, and even congratulatory to a member of the opposition party, Trump, even in a “private” conversation, also obviously had no intentions of backing down from his promises to...

A reporter at a Massachusetts-based newspaper resigned Friday after falsely claiming in a tweet Thursday that the man who killed five employees at the Capital Gazzete newspaper left a “Make America Great Again” hat at the crime scene. “Shooter who killed 4 people at Annapolis newspaper dropped his #MAGA hat on newsroom floor before opening fire,” Conor Berry, a reporter at The Republican in Springfield, Mass., wrote in a now-deleted tweet. Berry, who covered politics and crime for The Republican, apologized for the “stupid” and “regrettable” tweet Friday, adding that it made his 21-year career as a journalist come to...

It's a story that began nearly fifteen years ago… With its passage in November 2002, the Homeland Security Act set into motion what would be the single-largest government reorganization since the creation of the Department of Defense. Opening its doors in March 2003, one of the component agencies in the new Department of Homeland Security was the Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, now known as U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement or ICE. ICE was granted a unique combination of civil and criminal authorities to better protect national security and strengthen public safety in response to the deadly attacks perpetrated...

It’s official. As tragically revealing as the move might be, the rusty patched bumble bee has now joined the grizzly bear, gray wolf, northern spotted owl, and some 700 others on the endangered species list — the first bee ever to garner those protections in the continental United States. Once abundant in the grasslands and prairies in 31 states in the East and Midwest, the rusty patched bumble bee’s population has been decimated by as much as 95 percent by some estimates, and now exists only in isolated pockets in 12 states and the province of Ontario, Canada. “There are...

White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders unloaded on reporters and the mainstream media this week, slamming the journalists for chasing a “24 second news cycle” and rushing to judgment without the facts. Sanders was speaking with C-SPAN Thursday when she called-out the White House press pool for prioritizing “being first” over “being right” in their coverage of the Trump administration. “I think there’s a real race often to be first instead of to be right, and I think that’s a dangerous place,” said the Press Secretary. “We used to have a 24-hour news cycle, now we’re running more like...

Hillary Clinton, in an interview with a British newspaper this week, appeared to compare herself to wartime Prime Minister Winston Churchill while responding to a question about being a polarizing figure. “I’m sure they said that about Churchill between the wars, didn’t they?” she told The Guardian when asked if she should withdraw from public life to help heal divisions in the U.S., given her reputation. The 2016 Democratic presidential nominee then immediately claimed she wasn't actually comparing herself to Churchill, before going on to elaborate on the analogy. Churchill went into the political wilderness between the two World Wars...

At a time of growing economic inequality, Millennials are especially falling behind. A recent study by the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis found Millennials born in the '80s have a net worth 34% below what was expected. And student debt since 2009 has doubled to $1.4 trillion, contributing to a decline in home ownership among young people, per a Federal Reserve Bank of New York study. For many cash-strapped Millennials in debt, Democratic socialism isn't radical, it's a way to fix a system they believe failed them. And Democratic Socialists of America, an organization Ocasio-Cortez is a member of,...

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a Democratic Socialists of America member who won a Democratic primary victory this week in New York's 14th Congressional District, failed to clearly explain democratic socialism on Friday. Ocasio-Cortez joined "The View" panel where Meghan McCain asked about her self-described Democratic socialist views. The candidate has been at the center of attention since her upset in Tuesday's primary against incumbent Rep. Joe Crowley (D., N.Y.), a 10-term congressman and member of the Democratic leadership in the House of Representatives. Ocasio-Cortez is known for being one of the most left-leaning candidates in the 2018 midterm elections. "You consider yourself...

John Legend called on Sarah Sanders and others in President Donald Trump’s administration to resign if they don’t want to be harassed in public places. “Bottom line is that I’m very comfortable with a non violent form of social censure being visited upon people who implement and defend such intentionally harmful policies,” the 39-year-old singer tweeted Monday. The comments came in response to a video showing Rep. Maxine Waters calling on people to push back on those who work for the administration, like driving Sanders and Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen out of restaurants. “If you see anybody...

The idea was once relegated to the far-left. But the liberal push to abolish the federal agency that enforces federal immigration laws is going mainstream in the Democratic Party, with New York Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand and Mayor Bill de Blasio adding their support to the cause in the last 24 hours. "I believe that [Immigration and Customs Enforcement] has become a deportation force … and that's why I believe you should get rid of it, start over, reimagine it and build something that actually works," Gillibrand said in a CNN interview Thursday night. “We should abolish ICE,” de Blasio said...

TORONTO — Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has a message for refugees rejected by U.S. President Donald Trump: Canada will take you. He also intends to talk to Trump about the success of Canada’s refugee policy. Trudeau reacted to Trump’s ban of Muslims from certain countries by tweeting Saturday: “To those fleeing persecution, terror & war, Canadians will welcome you, regardless of your faith. Diversity is our strength #WelcomeToCanada.” Trudeau also posted a picture of him greeting a Syrian child at Toronto’s airport in late 2015. **** Warning **** Website has font big enough to read from mars The legalization of medical marijuana comes with a big issue for Oklahoma's gun owners. If you want to get medical marijuana, you can't own or buy a gun. Federal law prohibits any person who is an "unlawful user of or addicted to any controlled substance" from possessing firearms or ammunition. The law covers everything from owning, shipping, transporting or receiving any firearms or ammunition. There are no exceptions in the law for medical marijuana users. Some gun shop owners we talked to are a little concerned. 6/27/2018 Related...

The Senate today easily passed its version of the farm bill by a vote of 86-11,paving the way for a conference committee to reconcile differences with the House's version of the sweeping agriculture and nutrition legislation. The Senate farm bill attracted bipartisan support, as expected, but key differences with the House's partisan version, which passed last week, set up potentially contentious negotiations between the lawmakers who will be tasked with melding the two measures into one. The main differences relate to proposals for the food stamp program, farm subsidy caps and conservation initiatives. Congress has until Sept. 30 to get...
