New Orleans Gangs, Drug Dealers May Re-Emerge ElsewherePOSTED: 2:43 pm EDT September 27, 2005 BATON ROUGE, La. -- Hurricane Katrina did what authorities couldn't: put a stop to illegal drug operations in New Orleans and pushed its ruthlessly violent gangs from the streets of the city's poorest neighborhoods. The exact landing point of gang members isn't known for sure, though federal authorities suspect popular evacuation sites like Baton Rouge, Lafayette and Houston. But no matter where they land, the thugs from the Big Easy have been put at a distinct disadvantage, authorities say. "They are crippled," said U.S. Attorney Jim...

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) Olivia Howard says her 19 years as a prostitute were a blur of violence. She had a gun pointed at her head, was thrown out of cars and endured beatings and rapes. Now she and other advocates want a law that would let prostitutes sue the pimps and brothels that profit from their suffering. They say it would hold people accountable for coercing women and often girls into prostitution. An Illinois House committee approved the idea unanimously Wednesday, sending it to the House floor. The legislation would give prostitutes up to 10 years to seek damages from...

Jacko and Snoop Dogg's America Michelle Malkin (archive) February 2, 2005 | Cry me a river. Michael Jackson's father is blaming -- what else? -- American "racism" for his ghoulish son's persistent legal and personal problems. Joe Jackson reportedly told CBS News's "48 Hours": This is just the United States. All the rest of the countries, all over the world, are proud of Michael. It's here we have the most trouble out of them. It is racism. Who is "them"? After millions of American record buyers of all races propelled Michael Jackson to unimaginable heights of fame and fortune during...

Wednesday was Meth Awareness Day at the State Capitol, and just in time. Symptoms of methamphetamine use include a false sense of power, incessant talking and purposeless, repetitive behavior. Of course, those things in the Capitol only prove that the Legislature is in session. But whatever our lawmakers may be smoking, the warning signs are clear: They have begun neglecting their responsibilities and are having trouble setting priorities. This was a disgrace: While state officials were getting hip to crank yesterday, leaders of Minnesota's two largest religious faiths were two miles away, visiting the West Side of St. Paul in...

Please help me settle a disagreement with my teenage daughter. She likes rap and hiphop (artists such as Usher, Eminem etc.). I frequently criticize these singers for their poor use of the English language. However, she criticizes me, in turn, because I listen to Brooks & Dunn. In fact, just to annoy her, I sometimes adopt their style of speaking. She wants to know why (in my view) it's OK for country singers to talk "funny" in their songs, but not for rap artists. She doesn't go for my answer that the latter singers are more politically conservative LOL. Thanks...

Registering voters to get rid of 'ultra-conservative' BushFearing conservatives could shut down their businesses, strip club owners are asking patrons to take a moment to fill out a voter registration and then cast their presidential ballot for Sen. John Kerry. ''It's not to say our industry loves John Kerry or anything like that,'' trade publisher Dave Manack told the Associated Press. ''But George Bush, if he's re-elected, it could be very damaging to our industry.'' Manack, associate publisher of E.D. Publications, which publishes Exotic Dancer magazine, says adult night clubs take in an estimated $15 billion annually and employ 500,000...

NEW YORK (AP) -- Ten years ago, it seemed as if every rapper wanted to be a gangsta. Now, everyone wants to be a pimp. 50 Cent and Snoop Dogg strut in full pimp regalia, surrounded by a bevy of beauties, in their new video "P.I.M.P." Rappers like Lil' Jon bounce through their videos holding jewel-encrusted chalices popularized by pimps. Even old-school soul veteran Ronald Isley personifies the pimp style with his alter-ego, "Mr. Biggs," right down to his elaborate cane. Modeling yourself after figures most people consider among the degenerates of society might not seem like the most respectable...

Jesse Swanson, 30, was charged Thursday with six counts of prostitution -- pandering, accepting and transporting. He pleaded innocent to each. Police said Swanson arranged prostitution jobs for at least two Ypsilanti High School freshman, set prices, drove them to and from appointments and took half the money they were given. He also threatened to harm the girls if they told anyone of the sex acts, according to police. Swanson apparently kept a notebook that described the ways in which the...
