Putin Tells U.S. He’ll Halt War in Exchange for Eastern Ukraine
The Wall Street Journal ^ | Aug. 8, 2025 | Bojan Pancevski in Berlin and Alexander Ward

Russian President Vladimir Putin presented the Trump administration this week with a sweeping proposal for a cease-fire in Ukraine, demanding major territorial concessions by Kyiv—and a push for global recognition of its claims—in exchange for a halt to the fighting, according to European and Ukrainian officials.

European officials expressed serious reservations about the proposal, which would require Ukraine hand over Eastern Ukraine, a region known as the Donbas, without Russia committing to much other than to stop fighting. The offer, which Putin conveyed Wednesday to U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff in Moscow, set off a diplomatic scramble to get further clarity on details of the proposal. European and Ukrainian officials, who were briefed by President Trump and Witkoff in a series of calls this week, said they worry Putin is simply using the offer as a ploy to avoid punishing new U.S. sanctions and tariffs while continuing the war Trump said Wednesday the Russian leader’s offer wasn’t a breakthrough, but was enticing enough to begin organizing a summit meeting as soon as next week. The proposal could signal a shift away from Russia’s previous demands for full Russian control of regions along the entire front line, which extends beyond the Donbas.

Putin told Witkoff he would agree to a complete cease-fire if Ukraine agreed to withdraw forces from all of Ukraine’s eastern Donetsk region, according to officials briefed on the call. Russia would then control the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, as well as the Crimea peninsula, which it seized in 2014 and wants recognized as sovereign Russian territory.

It’s my understanding that’s what the people of that region want - to be part of Russia, and not the Ukraine.

And, no, the Donbas is NOT the Sudetenland, and Russia is NOT Nazi Germany. Let’s get that BS off the table up front.

So if “the people” of Arizona and New Mexico wanted to leave the US you’d be okay with it?

They have used up most the Ukrainian young men and Russia is certainly hurting.
That is their war not ours.
My question is;
Who is going to mine and process all the
elements Moscow seems to want?

All because stupid European leaders did not admit Ukraine into NATO after 2008. They were trying to appease Putin. How did that turn out ?

Negotiating position - always ask for much more than you expect to end up with.

Trump wants access to the rare earth minerals, and to deal with Zelensky to get them. Putin would have to give up all access now available for the rare earths. In return, the now mostly ethnic Russian regions would be surrendered back to the Russian Federation, with a permanent access across those regions by Ukraine to reach all points that are determined to be under the sovereignty of Ukraine. Then a pledge to respect and maintain the borders as established.

But then, absent any further knowledge of the factors on the ground. a long-term resolution to the differences between the two nations would have to be worked out, so this does not turn into a long-running border dispute.

Then your understanding is wrong. Polls in both 2022 and 2024 showed that the residents of Donbas preferred union with Ukraine over Russia 2:1. That being said, it still might be the best deal that Ukraine can get, provided Russia is willing to withdraw from the Kherson and Zaporizhzhi oblasts.

Zelensky was shelling that region before Russia invaded. So he can’t maintain that he has a special love for that region.

Virginia is no longer part of DC. And they've talked about that part of DC which was taken from Maryland going back to Maryland.

But the Dems wants what left of the boundaries of DC to be a separate State.

If they wanted to leave because Washington District of Corruption banned the Roman Catholic Church there I would be 200% fine with them leaving.

If they did that, Russia wouldn't cut them off from cheap oil. Germany was dependent on Russian oil.
