An investigation is underway after a Los Angeles police officer’s personal rifle accidentally fired a round in a parking garage earlier this week, officials announced. The May 9 incident occurred in the lower-level parking structure of the Compton Courthouse, located at 200 West Compton Boulevard, according to an LAPD news release. The officer, who has not been identified, was reportedly standing outside his patrol vehicle and was “manipulating his personally owned patrol rifle, when a Non-Tactical Unintentional Discharge occurred,” police said. Surrounded by concrete, the bullet ricocheted off the ceiling and struck the roof of the officer’s unoccupied patrol vehicle.

The documentary filmmaker who testified last week about the Jan. 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol said on Sunday that he and his crew were aware they had filmed “multiple crimes” when they followed the far-right militia Proud Boys during the rioting for a documentary about division in America. Nick Quested told NBC’s “Meet the Press” host Chuck Todd that he saw crimes “on the steps of the Capitol” and “inside the Capitol.” After filming the events of Jan. 6, when a pro-Trump mob stormed the U.S. Capitol in an attempt to overturn certification of the 2020 election, Quested...

Less than two years after Newark sold a piece of property for $1 to its parking authority, city officials are pushing a deal to lease it back. The total cost for the city: More than $27 million over 30 years. The city would then rent storage space for its municipal court, relocate its finance department there and get 258 parking spots for use during business hours. Would you trust a robot to park your car? The question will confront New Yorkers in February as the city's first robotic parking opens in Chinatown. The technology has had a good track record overseas, but the only other public robotic garage in the United States has been troublesome, dropping vehicles and trapping cars because of technical glitches. Nonetheless, the developers of the Chinatown garage are confident with the technology and are counting on it to squeeze 67 cars in an apartment-building basement that would otherwise fit only 24, accomplished by removing a ramp and maneuver space normally required. Rather,...

A six-story parking garage under construction at the National Institutes of Health collapsed Monday, pinning one person in the debris, authorities said. Authorities don't yet know what caused the top three floors of the structure to collapse around 9 a.m., said NIH spokesman John Burklow. Besides the person pinned in the debris, several people had been trapped, but were being freed, Montgomery County Fire and Rescue spokesman Pete Piringer said. The extent of their injuries was not immediately clear, he said. The sprawling campus of the federal agency covers more than 300 acres on the outskirts of Washington.
