Ivy Tech Community College and the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Belonging recognizes October as LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer) History Month. In 1994, Missouri high school teacher Rodney Wilson realized that students were not learning about the LGBTQ+ people or the LGBTQ+ rights movement. After creating Lesbian and Gay History Month, Wilson served as the founder of the first coordinating committee. In 1995, The General Assembly of the National Education Association passed a resolution to commemorate October as LGBTQ History Month.
