“When you look that closely at someone, you almost always develop sympathy for them,” Rockwell says. “It's like sitting next to someone for a long bus ride. … I want to think about who these people are and why they made the choices they did. I want to share the results of my thoughts, which are my paintings, with other people.” She was particularly inspired to paint bin Laden. “We take for granted who he was and what he did and why, and stop thinking of him as a human being with profoundly human motivations. The war on terror is...
  • Leading the Fight vs. Native America's Painkillers

Three tribes lead the best practice initiative treating the epidemic of painkiller addiction in Native America, Oklahoma, the nation's leader in painkiller addiction. Treating all adults, Medicaid. Last month the Center for Disease Control called prescription painkiller addiction an epidemic in the country, identifying Oklahoma as leading the nation in both the addiction and related deaths. It is only fitting that the battle against such addiction in "Native America" be led by three tribal owned clinics, Absentee Shawnee Counseling Services, OKC; Keetoowah Cherokee Treatment Services, Tulsa; and Quapaw Counseling Services, Miami. Generally speaking, prescription painkillers are opiates. There are 14...

How much attention do you pay to the state of the U.S. economy? It has a direct effect on my business. I believe you lead from the top down, and if I ran my business like the guy in the White House runs his business now, whether it's your debt-to-GDP, or your inflows to your outflows, basically — I'd be bankrupt. If I didn't show the confidence to my staff from 2007 to where we are today, making a change to the business model, making adjustments within human resources, moving people out, which you don't like to do, to consolidate...

There’s news from Oklahoma today of an earthquake which has struck with a magnitude of 4.3. The quake was actually felt across 5 states and was one of the strongest quakes ever in Oklahoma, with only 3 stronger since 1907. The US Geological Survey recorded the quake hit at 09:06 am around six miles away from Norman, Cleveland County. The earthquake was also felt in parts of southern Kansas, Arkansas, Missouri and Texas and it appears that fortunately there have only been 2 people reported to have minor injuries, according to Murray Evans in an Associated Press report over on...

CLEVELAND - A tape recording of the 1970 shooting deaths of four Kent State University students by Ohio National Guardsmen reveals the sound of pistol shots 70 seconds earlier, a newspaper reported Friday citing the work of a forensic audio expert. The finding lends support to a theory that the guardsmen thought they were being shot at during a campus Vietnam War protest. Witnesses said at the time that an FBI informant monitoring the protest fired warning shots because he felt threatened.

SOUTHPORT, England — The last time a golfer did what Greg Norman has a chance to do in the British Open, this name was Old Tom and the American Civil War had recently ended. So it is fitting that here in the land where 100-year-old golf courses are regarded as new, Norman is one step from rewriting his own history, and one of golf’s oldest records.

"European bankers and the dollar holocaust" OK, this article isn't finished yet, but I was thinking like "why not publish what I've written so far beforehand, the topic is a highly important one and people here on Free Republic aren't whiners, sure they'll forgive me for saving this draft for later forum abuse and instead I could go treat my sore European intellect to some Absolut and b-movies". I'm on holiday, actually. The unfinished article (please comment!!): "Personally, I'm not born of banking stock. Fond Memories of a 1984 Meeting in Washington, DC I was saddened to learn of the recent passing of Larry Norman. I could not help but reminisce about several days nearly a quarter century ago when the leader of the modern conservative movement addressed a gathering of Christian media leaders in Washington, DC and an anti-establishment Christian rock activist dropped in. Two events during these few days had an indelible impact on my life. Larry sang Jesus into my life during the early 1970’s when I was not seeking God. I knew of Larry from the band « People »...

Norman House find Contractors working on the £12 million revamp of Shrewsbury’s Music Hall have made a startling discovery after uncovering a Norman house within its structure. An archaeological evaluation of the site has revealed that Vaughan’s Mansion, which was originally thought to date back to Tudor times, is actually a defensive house which could be 800 years old. Councillor Charles Armstrong, portfolio holder for leisure, said the Music Hall was a “time capsule of history” and said the shock discovery would lead to the Mansion becoming a key focal point for the whole scheme. Dominic Wallace, partnerships and development...

Brooklyn District Attorney Charles Hynes won his biggest victory to date today against the former chairman of the borough's Democratic party. After nearly three days of deliberations, a Brooklyn jury found Clarence Norman Jr. guilty of extorting a judicial candidate. Norman's most recent trial — his fourth — was the first to address, even indirectly, allegations that judgeships have been bought and sold in Brooklyn. Mr. Hynes has staked his legacy on the outcome of his investigation into the sale of judgeships. The investigation, now in its fifth year, continues, Mr. Hynes' deputy, Michael Vecchione, said following the verdict. Prosecutors...

OU death not linked to terrorism By Nolan Clay The FBI concluded a University of Oklahoma student who blew himself up last year on campus was not a terrorist, the top agent in Oklahoma says. "We have no evidence he had a social or political agenda that he was trying to bring attention to," said Salvador Hernandez, the FBI's special agent in charge in Oklahoma. "We don't consider this terrorism the way we define it," he said. "There would have to be a cause." Joel "Joe" Henry Hinrichs III, an engineering student, died Oct. 1 when his bomb went off...

NORMAN - A Norman police bomb expert said Tuesday he does not believe University of Oklahoma student Joel Henry Hinrichs III committed suicide by blowing himself up outside a packed football stadium. "I believe he accidentally blew himself up," Sgt. George Mauldin said. Mauldin said Hinrichs, 21, an engineering student, had two to three pounds of triacetone triperoxide, commonly known as TATP, in a backpack in his lap when it exploded Oct. 1. When asked if he believed Hinrichs meant to enter the stadium with the explosives, Mauldin replied, "I don't believe he intended for an explosion to occur at...

Norman, Oklahoma (population 100,923), is as American heartland as it gets. So on October 1, 2005, when Joel Hinrichs III, a 21-year-old Colorado Springs, Colorado engineering student at the University of Oklahoma strapped explosives to his body and blew himself up outside the college stadium where 84,000 fans were watching a Saturday-night football game, thus earning the town the distinction as home to America's first suicide bomber, I was, well, curious. Within 24 hours of the event, three players in the unfolding story issued statements aimed at quashing rumors that the bombing was terrorist related. University President David Boren, in...
