In what appears to have been a routine patrol, 30 members of Mexico's National Guard were caught off guard and ambushed from an unsuspecting local house. After repelling the initial attack, authorities soon discovered Ovidio Guzmán López, son of "El Chapo" and suspected co-leader of the Sinaloa Cartel, hiding inside the home. Two environmental groups are suing the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in an effort to protect the dunes sagebrush lizard, also known as the sand dune lizard, under the Endangered Species Act. The Center for Biological Diversity and the Defenders of Wildlife filed a lawsuit in federal district court on Tuesday. The small lizard only lives in southeast New Mexico and west Texas. A Republican attorney filed a lawsuit on Tuesday demanding that two California agencies develop a better system to verify the citizenship of people who register to vote through the Department of Motor Vehicles. In the lawsuit filed in the U.S. District Court in Sacramento, Harmeet Dhillon alleges Secretary of State Alex Padilla is violating federal law by not verifying citizenship information from the state’s Department of Motor Vehicles. She wants the DMV to send Padilla more records related to citizenship to demonstrate that only eligible people are able to register.

SANTA FE, N.M. — The U.S. Forest Service announced Thursday that it was suspending fuelwood permits in all five national forests in New Mexico, as well as one in Arizona as the result of a court-ordered injunction having to do with protections for the Mexican spotted owl. The owl is listed as a threatened species by both the U.S. and Mexican governments. In addition, timber management activities have been suspended, according to a news release.
