KNOXVILLE — Former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich is planning a campaign tour through East Tennessee on Monday, the day before the state's Republicans vote in the Super Tuesday presidential primary, according to his state campaign co-chairman. State Rep. Tony Shipley, R-Kingsport, said it's still up in the air whether Gingrich will travel by bus or by airplane on the journey through East Tennessee. But he said it is firm that there will be stops in the Tri-Cities area, in Knoxville and in Chattanooga. Further specifics will be forthcoming later, possibility with more stops added, Shipley said. State Sen. Stacey...

Mitt Romney resorts to lying every time he is cornered, two former congressmen who support his rival, Newt Gingrich, claim in a letter sent to influential newspapers in Super Tuesday states. Former Reps. Bob Walker and J.C. Watts asked the papers to bear in mind 18 instances in which either Romney or his super PAC, Restore Our Future, have spouted what they call “falsehoods.” “Governor Romney’s negative attack mentality, unfortunately, is a reflection of his own persona,” Watts and Walker say in the letter sent to leading newspapers in Georgia, Ohio, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and Washington state. All have primaries next...

The prospect of Rick Santorum winning the Republican nomination for president has made a lot of Republicans nervous. Sure, the slugfest with Mitt Romney will continue beyond today’s primaries in Michigan and Arizona. But party leaders and pundits are already assessing the damage wrought by those who have dragged the party to the far-right fringes of conservative thought. New York Times columnist David Brooks writes that this is a real problem for the party seeking to capture the White House: “All across the nation, there are mainstream Republicans lamenting how the party has grown more and more insular, more and...

Conservative Internet activists are the best informed by far, as a group. In the Twitterverse, #MyVoteFactor demonstrates (allowing for the organized "Paul-Qaeda," as at least one of the bound calls them) the swell of support that the Speaker is getting. To capitalize on this surge, the Gingrich campaign has opened a social media site for their supporters, NewtsNetwork.com. The Newtwork at work It remains to be seen how effectively the Newtwork will work - whether by it, Internetters will decide to open their front doors and walk their neighborhoods, or make phone calls in their states and others. In addition...

On a recent Lou Dobbs show, The Hill commentator Dick Morris was asked about the primary outcome: Mitt Romney wins Michigan and then goes on to sweep Super Tuesday and wins the nomination. He beats Obama and is elected president in 2012. Makes sense. But Laura Ingraham, who brings intuition to her take, said Tuesday morning on Imus that if Romney wins Michigan, look for a Gingrich insurgence on Super Tuesday. In a word, Gingrich will finally have commandeered the insurgent’s role, taking it finally from Santorum (and Perry, Cain, Bachmann and Paul). And since Sarah Palin was named VP...

Nebraska may be a reliably red state, but the Obama campaign has had staff on the ground in Omaha since October, and the campaign has an office opening there planned for March 15, campaign sources say. Why? Because Nebraska is one of two states (the other is Maine) that awards electoral votes according to congressional district. And in case of any 269-269 electoral college tie, the campaign is taking no chances. Scoff if you like — but the campaign did this in 2008, and won Nebraska’s 2nd congressional district. The Obama campaign jokingly referred to the strategy – and the...

Ever since Newt Gingrich's loss in Florida's Republican primary I've been trying to read that gotcha-just-where-I-want-you smile of his. What's his plan for winning the nomination? No matter how bleak his prospects appear, he does have a plan, that we can be certain of. And whatever it is, it is patient, simple and clever. He's the same man after all who wrote a book explaining how Robert E. Lee could have won the battle of Gettysburg by simply abandoning the field July 2, marching a day south and east and waiting for the Union Army to destroy itself. As Newt...

A super PAC supporting former House Speaker Newt Gingrich’s Republican presidential campaign is launching a major new advertising blitz, after receiving another large donation from casino magnate Sheldon Adelson. A spokesman for the super PAC, Winning Our Future, declined to comment on the donation, which the Associated Press reported is “similar to” the two $5 million dollar donations that Adelson already gave the super PAC. But the super PAC will begin airing a series of new ads this week in Georgia, Ohio, Oklahoma, and Tennessee, which vote March 6, and in Mississippi, Alabama, and Kansas, which vote later in March....

Dalton, Ga. - There was a new song blaring from the speakers at Newt Gingrich's rally Tuesday morning: Rick Derringer's "Real American," the theme song from Hulk Hogan's iconic World Wrestling Federation days. "I am a real American, fight for what's right, fight for your life!" go the lyrics. Newt Gingrich is fighting for his political life in his home state of Georgia, where he needs to win 50 percent of the vote on primary day to secure all 76 delegates and catch up in the delegate race. He emphasized to the crowd of over 500 people that he is...

CARROLLTON, Ga. (AP) — Trying to mount another comeback, Newt Gingrich skipped Tuesday’s Republican presidential primaries in Michigan and Arizona to make a stand in the South and urged supporters in his home state to help him jumpstart his campaign. Gingrich spoke before polls closed in the two primaries and made no reference to either contest. Next week, on “Super Tuesday,” 10 states, including Virginia, with a total of 419 delegates at stake will vote in the GOP race, including Georgia. He represented the state in the House for 20 years. “I think re-electing Barack Obama will be a disaster,”...

NASHVILLE (AP) — Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich on Monday slammed rival Rick Santorum as a "big labor Republican," accusing him of siding with unions over Memphis-based FedEx when the Senate grappled with a labor dispute in the 1990s. Gingrich, the former Georgia congressman and House Speaker, is hoping to revive his struggling campaign in the South, and he tailored his message Monday to Republican voters in Tennessee. Although polls show a close race between Santorum and Mitt Romney, Gingrich challenged the former Pennsylvania senator and his conservative credentials. "I think there are profound reasons that Rick lost the Senate...

-snip- Gingrich and Santorum, each a Catholic seeking the GOP nomination, view Kennedy’s words differently. Santorum says he felt sick after reading Kennedy’s 1960 speech and believes it advocated absolute separation of church and state. Gingrich calls it a "remarkable speech." He told Fox News Channel on Tuesday that Kennedy was reassuring voters that he wouldn’t obey any foreign religious leader. Gingrich said Kennedy was declaring "that his first duty as president would be to do the job of president, and I think that’s correct." Gingrich does share Santorum’s position on President Barack Obama

An independent group supporting Newt Gingrich has received another “substantial” contribution from billionaire casino owner Sheldon Adelson and will launch TV ads in seven states this week, a source close to the group confirmed Monday. The source, who requested anonymity to speak freely, did not confirm the amount of the contribution but called it substantial and at least on par with two $5 million donations Adelson and his family have given previously. The group, known as Winning Our Future, will launch TV ads Tuesday in Georgia, Oklahoma, Ohio and Tennessee, with more to come Wednesday in Mississippi, Alabama and Kansas....

One week to the Super Tuesday Georgia Primary, Newt Gingrich is positioned to defeat Rick Santorum, who has momentum, and Mitt Romney, who does not, according to a SurveyUSA tracking poll conducted for WXIA-TV in Atlanta. Gingrich gets 39% today, Santorum 24%, Romney 23%. Delegates are awarded proportionally, so Gingrich should get 3 delegates for every 2 that Santorum and Romney take. Compared to a SurveyUSA tracking poll 3 weeks ago, Gingrich is down 6 points, Romney is down 9 points, Santorum is up 15 points. Santorum's momentum may propel him during the final days before ballots are counted, closer...

It may be now or never. Romney must be defeated in Michigan. Above is a link to all of the newspapers in Michigan. Many of them you will find allow comments. I heard Newt Gingrich say on Saturday that he expects Romney will likely have a good day on Tuesday. This I believe is Newt’s subtle way of releasing his supporters to vote for Rick Santorum in Michigan where he is polling 8% and also low in Arizona. Newt is sagacious enough to know that while he cannot ask his voters to do this, he knows that Santorum dealing Romney's campaign a mortal wound on Tuesday would be the best chance of making this a one on one race between himself (a strong conservative) and Santorum (a strong conservative). Mitt blew...

NASHVILLE — Former Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania has brought his national momentum to Tennessee, outdistancing Republican presidential rival Mitt Romney by a nearly two-to-one margin among voters taking part in a new Vanderbilt University poll. But with Tennessee’s GOP primary now just nine days away, the race here remains fluid because one in four potential voters says he doesn’t know or doesn’t like any of the candidates, said Vanderbilt political science professor John Geer. “As big a theme as Santorum leading is that a lot of people haven’t made up their minds,” said Geer, co-director of the Vanderbilt Center...
