CONCORD, N.H. -- Former New Hampshire Sen. Bob Smith, a conservative Republican who once ran for president as an independent, is endorsing John Kerry for president. Smith, in a letter released Thursday by the Kerry campaign, praised his former colleague as a Democrat "who crossed the aisle to forge a bipartisan coalition in the Senate to balance the federal budget." Smith served two terms in the Senate representing New Hampshire before being defeated by John Sununu in the 2002 Republican primary.
