President Joe Biden’s Department of Justice will be launching new efforts involving court-appointed monitors who oversee police departments across the United States, expanding already-existing tools the DOJ uses to force departments’ compliance with its standards. During a speech at the 2021 International Association of Chiefs of Police Conference on Monday, Attorney General Merrick Garland announced the expansion, asserting that more is needed than current consent decrees, monitorships and investigations of police departments. Once on the margin of the margins, calls for the nationalization of US fossil fuel interests are growing. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, the basic argument was this: nationalization could expedite the phasing out of fossil fuels in order to reach climate targets while ensuring a “just transition” for workers in coal, oil, and gas. The German government is planning an economic aid package worth €822 billion to prevent companies from going under during the coronavirus pandemic. The United Nations and Interpol, the global police organization, are poised to become partners in fighting crime by jointly creating an international police force. Interpol, which is financed by 187 member nations, says the "global police doctrine" would allow the deployment of peacekeepers among rogue nations plagued by war and organized crime.
