“This guy is dangerous. If you’re in a home and he breaks into your home and you have a gun, blow him out the door cause he’s like a rabid animal,” Nassau County Sheriff Bill Leeper said, according to the paper. “He will kill you with his mindset. What he did to that deputy, was uncalled for, unnecessary and he needs to pay for it.”

WEST HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (AP) — An employee was killed and two people were wounded Tuesday in a shooting at a Long Island grocery store, police said. Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder said a person of interest in the shooting had worked at the store and remains at large. The shooting happened around 11 a.m. inside a manager’s office upstairs from the shopping floor at the Stop & Shop in West Hempstead, Ryder said. The man who was killed was a 49-year-old store employee, Ryder said. The two wounded were hospitalized and were conscious and alert.

A white couple on Long Island was arrested for allegedly harassing their black neighbor by repeatedly shooting pellets across her yard and leaving feces on her lawn, officials announced Monday. John McEneaney, 57, and his 53-year-old girlfriend, Mindy Canarick, are accused of carrying out the attacks on neighbor Jennifer McLeggan from October 2017 — when she moved into her Valley Stream home — until last month, according to Nassau County District Attorney Madeline Singas. McLeggan, a 39-year-old single mother of a 2-year-old daughter, brought attention to the alleged harassment last month by listing the allegations on a handwritten sign attached to her...

Nassau County chiefs want their residents to kick each other’s balls if they must, but don’t you dare go touching them … tennis balls, that is. Hey, no giggling! That was pretty much how it sounded when County Executive Laura Curran gave a rundown on how Nassau was going to navigate reopening tennis courts there, and what the new regulations would be when handling one another’s balls. Again … tennis balls. In fact, you can tell Curran was trying her hardest to get the word “tennis” in there each and every time she mentioned “balls,” but eventually she slipped …...

Health officials in Nassau County, New York, said on Wednesday they were monitoring 83 people who visited China and may have come in contact with the coronavirus. But Governor Andrew Cuomo said the county has had no confirmed cases so far. ‘This situation is not a situation that should cause undue fear,’ Cuomo told a news conference, saying that 27 people in New York have tested negative for the virus. At a separate news conference, officials in Nassau County, just east of New York City on Long Island, said that while they were monitoring 83 people, there were no confirmed...

Dozens of Long Island residents are being monitored for potential exposure to the deadly coronavirus, health officials announced Wednesday. Eighty-three Nassau County residents have been asked to undergo a two-week voluntary quarantine from the date that they traveled to China or had contact with someone infected with the virus, news station WPVI reported. “We’re monitoring this situation in Nassau very, very closely and have been right from the beginning to respond to any cases should they emerge in our county,” Nassau County Executive Laura Curran said at a press conference. The group is required to report their temperature and any...

A Long Island teen was fatally stabbed at a strip mall near his high school as dozens of other students pulled out their cellphones to record the melee rather than to help him, police said. Khaseen Morris, a 16-year-old senior at Oceanside High School, was stabbed once in the chest Monday afternoon during an apparent dispute over a girl. He later died at a hospital after many of the 50 to 70 teens who gathered nearby recorded the bloody attack and made no attempt to stop it, Nassau County police said at a news conference Tuesday. “Kids stood there and...

Four Nassau homeowners filed a lawsuit Tuesday against County Executive Laura Curran, contending the county’s reassessment is arbitrary, secretive and violates state and federal constitutional guarantees of equal protection and due process. The suit filed in state Supreme Court asks that the county be barred permanently from levying or collecting taxes based on new home values, which are scheduled to become final next month. It also asks the court to order and supervise new annual “scientific” property tax assessments for Nassau’s more than 386,000 residential properties. “The public record demonstrates that the countywide reassessment was performed in an extremely rushed...

An MS-13 member who stabbed two women and tried to rape a 2-year-old girl during a five-hour criminal frenzy two years ago was sentenced Wednesday to 26 years to life in prison. Tommy Alvarado-Ventura, 33, pleaded guilty last month to a litany of charges in connection with the March 22, 2017 spree. He was arrested shortly thereafter. A Nassau County police official at the time described the case as "probably the most heinous criminal act” he’d seen in 28 years on the job. "This defendant sexually assaulted a helpless toddler and brutally stabbed and attempted to murder two women, including...

The NYPD is warning police officers about a possible threat from the MS-13 gang, particularly when they are off-duty. CBS2’s Dick Brennan reports that in a bulletin the NYPD put out this alert: “Members of MS-13 are looking to ‘hit’ NYPD police officers, specifically in the Brentwood/Central Islip area as well as possibly Patchogue.” The bulletin says that the gang members would carry out the attacks on off-duty officers “in order to gain street credibility.” While the threat has not been substantiated, law enforcement experts say this cannot be taken lightly. “Whenever a law enforcement officer is being threatened, especially...

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. — With a pivotal local election looming in the fall, the Republican-controlled Nassau County Legislature recently approved new district lines that could help the party secure at least two more seats. A local Republican club has increased its campaign chest tenfold over the last two years, bringing in individual contributions of tens of thousands of dollars from a family paving company, a real estate developer and other donors with business before the county, according to disclosure records. And if past elections are any guide, the party can also turn for campaign help to workers from the county’s special...

A Nassau bagpipe band has passed on the Jets’ invite to play during halftime over NFL players taking a knee during the national anthem, officials said Friday. A Jets group sales representative asked the Nassau County Firefighters Pipes and Drums Band early this week to entertain the crowd during the Nov. 2 game against the Buffalo Bills at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, said band manager Bobby Hughes, an original member of the band and an East Meadow volunteer firefighter. “We don’t feel we belong there,” said Hughes, a longtime Jets season ticket holder. “We cannot in good...

ew York appeals court denied Fox News host Bill O’Reilly’s petition seeking custody of his two children, Gawker reported on Monday. The court’s Feb. 24 ruling upheld a Nassau County Supreme Court decision granting full custody of the 12-year-old boy and 17-year-old girl to Maureen McPhilmy, the Factor host’s ex-wife. “Viewing the totality of the circumstances, there is a sound and substantial basis for the Supreme Court’s determination that it is in the best interests of the children for the mother to be awarded primary residential custody,” the Appellate Division Second Judicial Department court stated. “Particularly relevant in this case...

Although much attention was focused on the elections on Tuesday of decidedly left-of-center Democrats in Boston and New York City, little reported was the major gain of Republicans in two Northeastern states long considered "no man's land" for the GOP. Republicans took considerable new ground in contests for city halls and county offices in New York and Connecticut. In New York, Republicans re-elected county executives in Westchester and Nassau Counties, captured the mayoralty in Binghamton and a majority of the county legislature in Erie County for the first time since 1977, and won a special election for the state Assembly...
