The unsung heroes of your community’s police force are its capable K-9 unit. These talented pooches can serve alongside a police force for upwards of a decade. As any pet owner knows, one of the hardest things in life is saying goodbye to your best friend. Police in West Deptford, New Jersey had to do just that late last week. Noted police dog Judge, who retired from active service in 2013, was given a hero’s farewell as he was walked into the vet’s office to be put down:

James Wathen, 73, is a terminally-ill patient at Baptist Health Corbin in Corbin, Kentucky. His body frail and spirit weak, hospital staff were having difficulty improving Wathen's condition. But Wathen whispered that he was missing his beloved one-eyed-Chihuahua named Bubba, the nurses leant forth their greatest efforts to reunite Wathen with his dog. Sources at the Bakersfield animal shelter tell TMZ ... Scrappy was euthanized at the end of a 10-day hold following the attack. We're told the dog was aggressive during his stay at the shelter, even trying to bite a couple of employees. A cat came to her best friend's rescue Tuesday when the young boy was attacked in his driveway in Southwest Bakersfield. The surveillance video shows the boy playing on his bicycle when a dog sneaks up behind him and grabs his leg. The family's cat, named Tara, rushes the attacking dog and chased it away. The boy's mother, Eric Triantafilo, told 23ABC the boy needed a few stitches, but he is doing fine this morning.

Kentucky authorities believe that a woman was eaten by dozens of her pet wolf-dogs after she died. The Ohio County Sheriff’s Office told WFIE-TV that when they conducted a welfare check on 67-year-old Patricia Ritz, they found a human skull and jawbone as 50 hybrid wolf-dogs roamed her Fordsville property. Police say the dog severely injured the two day old girl. The pit bull belonged to her family. She was initially taken to the Coffeyville Regional Medical Center with life threatening injuries. She was then transported to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita and is listed in stable condition.
