Six elderly Jews from Iraq, from among the last remaining Jews in the country, landed Friday evening in Israel on a direct flight from Baghdad. The Jews were flown to Israel as part of a joint operation of the Jewish Agency and the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society (HIAS), a Jewish-American organization that deals with humanitarian aid to Jews throughout the world. Iraq once had a thriving community of 130,000 Jews, but about 120,000 made their way to Israel between 1949 and 1952, with smaller numbers of Jews leaving the country in subsequent years. Last week, 330 new immigrants from the United States landed in Israel. In the evening, I met five of them for the first time. Hundreds of American immigrants to Israel landed in their new homeland this morning after an all-night flight from the US. The group, organized by the organization Nefesh B' Nefesh ("Soul to Soul"), comprised about 330 US and Canadian Jews.
