Americans have a more unfavorable view of Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts than they did seven years earlier, according to a new poll, which finds his support among Republicans, in particular, having eroded sharply. Among Republicans, Roberts's drop has been more drastic. Sixty-seven percent of Republicans had a favorable view of Roberts in 2005, a figure which plummets 40 points to 27 percent in the 2012 survey. Four percent had an unfavorable view of the chief justice in 2005, jumping to 44 percent in the new poll.

(Reuters) - President Barack Obama's approval ratings have dipped to their lowest level since January on deep economic worries, wiping out most of his lead in the White House race over Republican rival Mitt Romney, a Reuters/Ipsos poll showed on Tuesday. The percentage of Americans who approve of Obama's job performance dropped from 50 a month ago to 47, matching his mark in early January. The number who think the country is on the wrong track rose 6 percentage points in a month to 63 percent. The doubts about Obama's leadership helped Romney pull to within 1 point of the...

Washington (CNN) -- More than three years after leaving office, former President George W. Bush remains unpopular with the public, according to a new national poll. A CNN/ORC International poll also indicates that two-thirds of Americans have a positive view of Bush's predecessor, former President Bill Clinton. According to the poll, released Thursday morning, 43% of people questioned had a favorable opinion of Bush, with 54% saying they had an unfavorable view of the former president. Bush's 43% favorable rating is the same as it was in 2010 in CNN polling, but is up from his mid-30's favorable rating during...
  • Obama’s 2011 Gallup job approval rating lowest yet

This past year’s presidential job-approval average from Gallup caught me by surprise. After all, Barack Obama got Osama bin Laden in May, which gave him a few weeks of good job approval ratings, and his 2010 drubbing in the midterm elections would make most presume that he’d reached his nadir. Not hardly: President Barack Obama averaged 44% job approval for his third full year in office, which ended Jan. 19. His third-year average is down slightly from his second-year average of 47% and much lower than his first-year average of 57%. Obama’s third-year average is based on approximately 175,000 interviews...

"Obama’s job-approval ratings show signs of improvement, Post-ABC poll finds." That's the oh-so-hopeful headline from the Washington Post about its WaPo/ABC poll, but how reliable is it, and just what improved? After a difficult summer and a contentious fall, President’s Obama’s job-approval ratings are showing signs of improvement — a crucial indicator of his reelection chances as he positions himself to seek a second term.A new Washington Post-ABC News poll finds that Americans are still broadly disapproving of Obama’s handling of the economy and jobs, the top issues, but that views of his overall performance have recovered among key groups,...

On its face, the idea that an incumbent officeholder can be reelected when more Americans disapprove of his or her job performance than approve seems unlikely. After all, if voters don't like the job you're doing, why would they give you the chance to keep doing it? But President Obama, whose job-approval ratings are mired well south of 50 percent, has an important factor breaking his way as he seeks another term: Americans still overwhelmingly like the guy. There is a partial correlation, pollsters say, between a politician's job-approval ratings and favorability ratings. Favorability ratings generally represent a ceiling, above...

  • Gallup: “Americans Say Reagan Is the Greatest U.S. President”

(PRINCETON, NJ) — Ahead of Presidents Day 2011, Americans are most likely to say Ronald Reagan was the nation’s greatest president — slightly ahead of Abraham Lincoln and Bill Clinton. Reagan, Lincoln, or John F. Kennedy has been at the top of this “greatest president” list each time this question has been asked in eight surveys over the last 12 years.

A new poll shows that 46% of Americans believe Democrats "care more about the needs of people like you" while just 39% say Republicans care more. But when asked which party can better help the people on specific issues as opposed to the general "who cares more" question, Republicans win hands down. So why the disconnect? Why are so many Americans clinging to a failed and destructive ideology when they themselves believe it's not working in their lives?

How low can President Obama's approval rating go? Pretty low, it appears. The president's approval rating reached a new all-time low, according to a national Quinnipiac survey released today. The survey finds that just 44 percent of registered voters approve of the job he has done as president -- his worst score ever -- with 48 percent disapproving. “It was a year ago, during the summer of 2009, that America’s love affair with President Barack Obama began to wane. In July of 2009, the president had a 57 to 33 percent approval rating," said Peter Brown, assistant director of the...

New polling data shows President Barack Obama’s Job Approval continues to slide. The Real Clear Politics average of seven polls taken from June 17 through July 8 shows that the president garnered 46.4 percent favorable and 47.9 unfavorable, for a -1.5 deficit in job approval. However, the two most recent polls show larger margins of disapproval. Read all about it

NEW JERSEY (WABC) -- New Jersey Governor Chris Christie has been in office for just three months, and a new eyewitness news poll shows voters are not giving him any kind of a honeymoon as he presses for budget cuts. Only 33% of New Jersey residents approve the job Christie is doing as governor. Nearly twice the number, 63% disapprove. The telephone poll by SurveyUSA has a margin of error of plus or minus 4%.
  • Democratic Party Image Drops to Record Low

PRINCETON, NJ -- Americans' favorable rating of the Democratic Party dropped to 41% in a late March USA Today/Gallup poll, the lowest point in the 18-year history of this measure. Favorable impressions of the Republican Party are now at 42%, thus closing the gap between the two parties' images that has prevailed for the past four years. There has been little change by party in the Republican Party's favorable image compared to the late summer 2009 measure, although the percentage of Republicans with a favorable image of their party remains significantly higher than it was in May 2009.

WSJ/NBC News Poll: Throw ‘Em All Out Congress has managed to get its approval ratings back down to the pre-election level, with just 17% of voters saying they approve of the job Congress is doing, according to the latest Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll out later today. The trend line has been sinking for the past year, after a post-election peak of 31% in February 2009, a month after President Barack Obama took office and the new Congress began. More than three-quarters of voters, 77%, said they disapproved of the job Congress was doing. In fact, when it comes to...

There’s lot of bad news for the Democrats in the survey just released by Democracy Corps and Third Way, conducted by Democratic pollster Stanley Greenberg’s firm. The numbers I’ll quote here are the results for likely voters and don’t include “dropoff voters,” who tend to be younger and significantly more Democratic. Republicans lead on the generic poll for the House by 47%-44% and even lead in party identification, including leaners, by 47%-46%. This is in line with the Real Clear Politics average on the generic vote which shows Republicans ahead 44%-43%; if you drop the AP/Ipsos poll, an outlier which...
