The Vail Town Council has postponed adoption of an ordinance that would have prohibited the use of jake brakes on Interstate 70 through the mountain town. Truckers lambasted the proposed ordinance, with good reason. Not only would the proposed law unfairly single out their industry, but it would increase the risk of accidents on the highway that drops 500 feet from east Vail to west Vail. Jake brakes, or engine compression brakes, help large trucks reduce their speed without burning up conventional brakes. But they also produce a loud, booming clatter, that upset some of the good citizens of Vail....
