Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi promised to unite the country on Thursday after a big election win, with his party on course to increase its majority on a mandate of business-friendly policies and a tough stand on national security. Official data from the Election Commission showed Modi’s Hindu-nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ahead in 300 of the 542 seats being contested, up from the 282 it won in 2014 and more than the 272 seats needed for a majority in the lower house of parliament. That would give it the first back-to-back majority for a single party since 1984. “Together...

If any of you are watching the end of the elections in India (https://www.republicworld.com/livetv), and looking at the exit polls, looks like the voters have re-elected the incumbent PM. He, like Trump, was hounded by the media and liberal elite. The surprising results from the exit polls is that the poor and destitute in India voted for him and not the parties that were offering hand-outs and uber-socialist sops. Australia rejected the liberals, now India has...next up...the USA.

The office of Prime Minister-designate Narendra Modi on Sunday night, hours before he takes over as India’s 15th prime minister, indicated a smaller size of the next government and clubbing of ministries for smarter governance. A note from Modi’s secretariat said the PM-designate had “made a dent” in ministry formation by adopting, for the first time, a guiding principle of “Minimum Government and Maximum Governance”. “It is a good beginning in transforming entity of assembled ministries to organic ministries. It will bring more coordination between different departments, will be more effective and bring a speed in process,” the note stated....
  • India's Election: The Next Prime Minister Is A Dangerous Man

The results of India's election, which are rapidly appearing today, seem to show a huge win for the right-wing Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). A victory had been expected, but this looks like a massive landslide. The next prime minister is almost certain to be Narendra Modi, the chief minister of Gujarat, a state in western India. He is known for his economic agenda, which is seen to be relatively business-friendly (expect stocks to react very positively to the news), and his controversial brand of Hinduism. Modi's ideology is certainly going to be important over the next several years, but his...
  • White House welcomes Modi’s victory

The White House welcomed the overwhelming victory of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi in the Lok Sabha polls, offering its congratulations to the BJP on its “historic” win and assuring, “We look forward to working with [the new Indian government] once formed to advance our partnership.” However, while numerous world leaders, including Israel’s Benjamin Netanyahu and Australia’s Tony Abbott reportedly called Mr. Modi to personally congratulate him, U.S. President Barack Obama had not yet done so, at the time this story was filed, at around 11am on Friday Eastern Standard Time.(Here's the catch) An official at the White House’s National...
  • [Indian Politics] Narendra Modi's right hand man stopped for inciting hatred against Muslims

Narendra Modi, the odds on favourite for prime minister who is running under the banner of the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has suffered a major blow. His right hand man, Amit Shah (pictured), has been barred from future campaign rallies after making a number of anti-Muslim statements. A close Modi aide for years, Shah was in charge of his campaign in Uttar Pradesh, India's most populous state. In announcing its decision on Sunday, the Election Commission said that Shah's statements promoted "hatred and ill will" between religions. It also urged police to press criminal charges. The politician, among other...
