Police say up to 1,500 students rampaged through streets yesterday outside Reading High School in an after-school gathering that turned violent as officers arrived to control the crowd. Some students threw rocks and bottles and hit parked cars with baseball bats in the Wednesday afternoon melee that began with an anniversary celebration of the Dominican Republic's independence from Spain. Police Capt. Edward Kosmerl received several stitches for a head injury when struck by a rock. At least a half-dozen students were apprehended.
