    The Gettysburg Address celebrated “government of the people, by the people, for the people,” echoing the ideals of the Enlightenment: equality for all, and liberation from the yoke of tyrannical rulers. Since 1863 when Abraham Lincoln made his iconic speech, the “government of the people” bit has just purred along without a glitch.
