ORLANDO, Fla. - In the days after Election Day, county supervisor of elections offices across Florida are convening canvasing boards to count “challenged" or provisional ballots to make sure there is no uncertainty about the ballot. Election officials give voters provisional ballots for several reasons, including if a voter did not have proper identification at the time they voted or their name was not found on the voter rolls. Provisional ballots are hand-checked by canvasing boards that determine if the voter was eligible to vote at the time their ballot was cast. Boards of election or local election officials usually...

Gov. Rick Scott declared victory Tuesday with a slim 0.68 percentage point win over U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson, who conceded even though his campaign raised issues with ballot counting in several South Florida counties. Nelson advisor Dan McLaughlin told supporters at Nelson’s election night event at the Embassy Suites in Orlando that the campaign had concerns about ballot counting in several south Florida counties. But just after midnight, the Nelson campaign said he would concede. “This is obviously not the result Senator Nelson's campaign has worked hard for,” said Pete Mitchell, Nelson’s campaign manager. “The senator will be making a...

Florida Democrat Sen. Bill Nelson called Wednesday for a recount in his race for re-election against Republican Gov. Rick Scott. In a statement from Nelson's office, the longtime incumbent said Scott had prematurely declared victory in the race, which CNN has not yet called. In Florida, an automatic recount is triggered when the final margin is less than .5% and is not triggered by candidate requests. Votes were still being counted Wednesday morning, but Scott's lead was within that margin, according to CNN projections. The initial vote count won't be finalized until Saturday at noon.

FLORIDA - The U.S. Senate race between Florida Gov. Rick Scott and Sen. Bill Nelson is still statistically too close to call – despite Scott calling the race for himself Tuesday night. Poll results are counting in at 50-50 with Scott pulling ahead slightly with less than 40,000 votes between them. In a speech to supporters in Naples just before midnight on Tuesday, Scott said he was confident in his victory.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Ron DeSantis was elected governor of Florida on Tuesday, handing President Trump an important victory and extending the Republican Party’s dominance in the nation’s third-largest state. Mr. DeSantis, a 40-year-old former congressman, fended off his opponent, Andrew Gillum, one of the strongest candidates Florida Democrats had fielded in years. Republicans have now won every election for governor since 1998. “Every two years there’s one day in November where elites don’t call the shots, don’t craft the narrative or set the agenda,” Mr. DeSantis told jubilant supporters festooned in confetti in an Orlando hotel ballroom late on Tuesday...

Constitutional Amendment 4 — known as the Voting Restoration Amendment — was passed in the state, allowing nearly 1.5 million convicted felons who’ve served out their sentence to vote. The measure doesn’t apply to anyone convicted of murder and felony sex offenses. Prior to the amendment, convicted felons in the state had to wait five years after serving out their sentence and then apply with the Florida Clemency Board for the right to vote. The governor then needed to personally approve their petition to have their rights restored.

Congressman Ron DeSantis won the Florida's governor's race tonight with 49.9 percent of the vote, defeating his progressive opponent Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum in one of the mostly closely watched races in the country. A new survey shows that while healthcare and the economy are "very important" to voters, the issues of climate change and alleged Russia collusion in the 2016 election are at the bottom of the list for voters in terms of importance. In the poll, Gallup asked, "How important will each of the following issues be to your vote for Congress this year?"

Florida’s largest newspaper chain published a well-timed hit piece on Gov. Rick Scott, an apparent attempt to undermine his campaign to unseat forever Washington politician Sen. Bill Nelson — the man Forbes magazine once famously depicted on their cover with, literally, an empty suit. The pre-planned package of stories was published by GateHouse Media, which owns 21 newspapers in the state, including dailies in Jacksonville, Palm Beach, Sarasota, Daytona Beach, Panama City, Gainesville, St. Augustine and many more. The newspapers ran an astonishingly bad piece of journalism out of the Palm Beach newsroom entitled “Florida felon voting rights: Who got...
