• Are Christians Commanded to (Always) Vote? [And should you care if you're not religious?]

Is it a requirement for all Christians to vote? The question is not merely whether Christians should “dirty their hands” by participating in politics. Are Christians actually required to participate in politics? Can you be an obedient Christian without voting? I am starting to believe that nothing else can save the Republic. Everyone comments that we are a sharply-divided nation, with really no clear majority for either the Republican or Democrat Party. However, what if 10 million new voters showed up and voted Republican? The nation would no longer be 50-50. The balance would tilt sharply to the GOP Every...

“There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take the consequences.” — P.J. O’Rourke “We seem to be moving steadily in the direction of a society whereno one is responsible for what he himself did,but we are all responsible for what somebody else did, either in the present or in the past.” – Thomas Sowell It’s truly bizarre how often in Obama’s America that we are being presented with “victims” we’re supposed to feel sorry for without anyone even seeming...

Pentagon to mobilize reserve soldiers for Ebola dutyWASHINGTON — Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel has ordered the involuntary mobilization of 2,100 Army Reserve and National Guard soldiers for duty in Ebola-ravaged West Africa, the Pentagon announced Friday. The Army is notifying soldiers and their families about the compulsory call-up, Pentagon Press Secretary Rear Adm. John Kirby said in a statement. The units and their specialties are not being identified until the troops have been informed. Last month, the Pentagon announced its intent to mobilize eight reservists who had the engineering skills needed for building medical facilities.

How much is too much of a burden when it comes to being an American? As Americans, we’re required to engage with our government at all levels, in all sorts of ways. Many of those ways create burdens, but are part of the deal when we live under the rule of law and decide who represents us in government. Our relationship with our government is a two-way street. Consider some of the pillars of civic duty – voting, jury duty, registering for Selective Service, participating in the Census, challenging a property tax assessment. All of these carry burdens on us...

Vox clamantis in deserto. A voice in the wilderness. That phrase is from the Bible (Isaiah 40:3), but also happens to be the motto of my alma mater, Dartmouth College. Although both the Bible and Dartmouth – the latter founded before the American Revolution by a man who arrived, literally, in "the wilderness" with 500 bibles – use the Latin (originally Greek) to mean slightly different things, the spirit of the phrase however is clear: Even one voice, speaking truth on its own, can make a difference. Today, that one voice is the average American. It is you. It...

This is a "revised and extended" re-post of an article I wrote in 2011 to mark an anniversary of General Lee's death. It celebrates the two hundred and sixth anniversary of his birth on January 19, 1807, a happier occasion. Today, January 18th, is also Lee - Jackson Day in Virginia, as proclaimed by Governor Robert F. McDonnell. We have changed as a nation, often not for the better. We, as a nation, seem to have done with heroes of his type. Yet he inspired a fledgling nation, the Confederate States of America -- young, old, rich and poor alike. Those...

This photo of soldiers guarding the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in the rain has gone viral over social media especially Facebook in advance of Hurricane Sandy. Soldiers of the 3rd Inf Reg. continue to stand guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, despite the worsening weather conditions surrounding Hurricane Sandy. The tomb has been guarded continuously since 1948. The photo was taken by Karin Evink Markerton at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, Arlington National Cemetery, September 18, 2012, in the rain. Markerton posted a note on her Facebook wall to people tracking the origin of the photo....

Without any doubt in the minds of most of the folks that visit and support this website, Barack Hussein Obama II is without any question the worst President to ever hold office in this nation. He must be decisively thrown out of office by the American people – and FReepers are working hard to make that happen. Of course the lousy dirty leftist media is doing everything they can to save his sorry butt – but they won’t.

”All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.” (Edmund Burke) So much of the history of the struggle between good and evil can be explained by Edmund Burke’s observation. Time and again those who profess to be good seem to clearly outnumber those who are evil, yet those who are evil seem to prevail far too often. Seldom is it the numbers that determine the outcome, but whether those who claim to be good men are willing to stand up and fight for what they know to be right. There are numerous examples...

Obama got his 500,000,000,000.00 dollars today from the US Senate, thanks in no small part to Senator Son-of-a-Mitch McConnell, and Robo-Senator Reid-in-the-Wind. Obama had asked last night in his unfinished Jobs give-away bill , (i.e. "targeted") , for only 450,000,000,000.00 dollars. This is an obvious attempt to avoid a financial deadline. This timing of the speech, Joint Session, amount transferred, suggest a pattern of a sudden increase in spending by the Executive Branch of the US Government. It is now time to begin The Articles of Impeachment against President Obama to prevent further dereliction of financial duty and other neglected...

I've gotten a letter notifying me to report for federal jury duty(in Boston) on July 11th. Not a federal GRAND jury, just federal district court jury. I've filled in the online questionnaire and am supposed to call the court the night before the first day. Questions: the notice says "Monday, July 11 THROUGH Friday, July 29th." Does this mean that even if I am dismissed on the first morning I am required to keep calling for the entire two-week period? I live 62 miles--one way--from the courthouse. What is the mileage reimbursement(if there is one)? Is there a hotel reimbursement?...

There are too many white men in the U.S. military. So says a report released this week by the Military Leadership Diversity Commission (MLDC), commissioned by Congress to examine ways to "increase diversity" in the military. The MLDC report finds that 77% of active-duty senior officers are white, 8% black, 5% Hispanic, and 16% women (of unspecified race). What's the answer to this "problem"? Is the MLDC recommending that white males stop volunteering for military service? Do they want to start "selecting" who among them volunteers for service? Are they recommending that there be quotas for military service, as with...

Burial at Sea by LtCol George Goodson, USMC (Ret) In my 76th year, the events of my life appear to me, from time to time, as a series of vignettes. Some were significant; most were trivial. War is the seminal event in the life of everyone that has endured it. Though I fought in Korea and the Dominican Republic and was wounded there, Vietnam was my war. Now 42 years have passed and, thankfully, I rarely think of those days in Cambodia, Laos, and the panhandle of North Vietnam where small teams of Americans and Montangards fought much larger...
