WASHINGTON – Rep. Dana Rohrabacher says he always knew that if ever he got involved in Middle East politics, his views would get him in trouble.

He was right.

Rohrabacher is facing a primary challenge next month from former Rep. Robert K. Dornan. These two Republicans were once comrades in arms in promoting conservative principles. But the Middle East is the one major issue on which Dornan stayed with mainstream conservatives and Rohrabacher has strayed.

HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. - U.S. Rep.Dana Rohrabacher is an avid surfer, quick to wax on the spirituality of catching a wave.

His opponent in the March Republican primary for the 46th Congressional District is the less laid-back former congressman and talk show host Robert Dornan, who earned the nickname "B-1 Bob" in part for his virulent attacks on adversaries.

Yvonne Wachter's ridiculous attack on me ["Don't ignore Rohrabacher's links to extremists," Reader Rebuttal, Jan. 25] demonstrates why I won't have anything to do with Robert Dornan and his people.

There is no one in Congress who has been more active in supporting America's liberation of Afghanistan and Iraq. Furthermore, I have solidly backed President Bush's road map for Middle East peace. Yes, in the process I've dealt with moderate Arabs and Muslims. Of course, for some haters, all Arabs or Muslims are the enemy.

It is a privilege to have you here.Dornan: My pleasure to be here, Jamie.FP: Why don’t we start with a general question: why are you running against Dana Rohrabacher?Dornan: The war on terrorism. Congressman Dana Rohrabacher tells voters he’s adamantly pro-life, but he accepted contributions from one of the nation’s most prolific abortion doctors. He describes himself as a fearless political warrior, but he avoided military service in Vietnam. He calls opponents weak on national defense, but he quietly lobbied the Clinton administration to ease export controls that allowed the People’s Republic of China to receive sensitive U.S. missile technology. He backed a six-year term limit for congressmen early in his career, but he now seeks his 17th and 18th years in Washington, D.C. He tells younger audiences he’s a hip, surfing libertarian...

The first time I saw Bob Dornan in person was in Iowa in 1995 when he was running for the GOP presidential nomination. Assorted activists were invited to a small-group gathering at a downtown Des Moines hotel to hear this renowned conservative firebrand.

Imagine a congressman with the following interest group ratings: ACLU — 13 percent; League of Conservation Voters — 15 percent; NFIB — 93 percent; American Conservative Union — 100 percent; National Tax Limitation Committee — 97 percent. Now imagine a challenger running against that congressman because he isn’t conservative enough. Meet incumbent Dana Rohrabacher and challenger Bob Dornan. I’ve known both Rohrabacher and Dornan for more than 30 years. I’ve contributed to and walked precincts for both. Yet I hesitate not a nanosecond saying that Bob Dornan is on a fool’s errand, or more appropriately an ego-trip, that brings dishonor...

Bob Dornan thinks he's found Rep. Dana Rohrabacher's Achilles' heel, the issue that will be the Huntington Beach incumbent's downfall when the March Republican primary rolls around.

Drugs.

In his challenge to Rohrabacher, Dornan has quickly made the subject an issue, focusing on his opponent's drug use as a young man and his support for legalizing medicinal marijuana.

Judging by the way Robert K. Dornan’s entourage arrived at the registrar of voters on Dec. 5, Congressman Dana Rohrabacher is in trouble. A dented, rusty blue Volvo—minus the front grill—sped into the parking lot, took a wild swerve, narrowly missed a KOCE-TV van and lurched to a stop. A red-headed man with a beard and wearing a tie-windbreaker-sneaker ensemble jumped from the car. He smiled at startled reporters. It was Mark Dornan, a Queer Eye for the Straight Guy makeover candidate and son of Orange County’s most infamous ex-congressman. "I love this!" he said. "This is going to be...

Dornan Picks Fight on New Turf The fiery ex-lawmaker who lost his seat in 1996 will run against fellow conservative Republican Dana Rohrabacher. It's an echo of a 1991 threat. By Jean O. HON. ROBERT K. DORNAN in the House of Representatives FRIDAY, JULY 27, 1990 * Mr. DORNAN of California. Mr. Speaker, for some time now I have been trying to educate my colleagues on the brutal nature of the Assad regime in Syria. Syria is a state sponsor of terrorism. Syria's Armed Forces occupy large areas of Lebanon, thus denying the Lebanese people chance at true political reconciliation. The Syrian Government also runs drugs out of the Bekaa Valley in Lebanon, which is the issue I want to address today. * Mr. Dennis Eisenberg has written an article on Syrian drug-running...

ORANGE – California's Democrats in Congress met Wednesday and agreed to support a single candidate to replace Gov. Gray Davis if he is recalled – breaking from Davis' strategy to have no major Democrat running to succeed him.

Orange County's Loretta Sanchez is among those getting a close look. She is preparing for a possible campaign and has secured a legal opinion saying she can use her congressional campaign money to run for governor. But that's only if selected by her congressional colleagues.

When I was a GOP activist, every election season all I heard was "We have got to beat the Democrats." Finally I wised up to the fact that we no longer have a two-party system, we have a one-party system -- Demopublicans. They pass laws for us but make themselves exempt. Read: The Demopublican Party Wins Again. Former Congressman Bob Dornan (R-Ca), a strong pro-life advocate, on his radio talk show on June 2, 2003 interviewed Gary Aldrich, author of his newest book Thunder on the Left. Gary also is author of Unlimited Access about his experience as an FBI...
