From the outside, Johannesburg does not look like it is doing well. Roads littered with potholes. Broken traffic lights not repaired for months. Rotting rubbish in the streets. But from the inside, the scale of the problems facing the biggest city in South Africa and the richest and most industrialised in the continent is even worse. From taps regularly running dry to daily four-hour power cuts – known locally as load shedding – life for many people in Jo’burg has declined dramatically. The decline of southern suburb Forest Hills is a case in point. Previously dominated by poorer white people,...

Fox News' Juan Williams made an interesting claim about the continued existence of racism in the wake of the Charleston, S.C, shootings. "The polls indicate this, that white people think that black people are less intelligent," Williams said on the June 22, 2015, edition of The Five. "They think they’re less trustworthy, less patriotic. At some point you’ve got to deal with these root issues."

On Sunday evening, July 30, at around 8:00, I was in a supermarket near Roosevelt and Canal in Chicago’s South Loop, an upscale shopping, health club and movie hub on the edge of downtown. The area has been regarded as safe and on the upswing since the late 1990s and is even being considered for a new White Sox park or Bears stadium. While entering the store I noticed scores of African American teenagers lining the street. At first, I thought that there was some kind of festival or parade. But there was already a city policeman guarding the entrance....
