When the University of Chicago English Department announced over the summer that, in response to the protests after the death of George Floyd, they would only admit graduate students willing to work in Black Studies (a proclamation that, after media attention brought criticism, they recently removed from their webpage), observers of the increasing dominance of extremist ideas on race and race relations in higher education were not surprised. Indeed, as things go ever crazier inside American universities with respect to racial politics, it becomes more and more difficult for those of us on the inside, watching things deteriorate on a...

Whites and non-whites training to be Residential Assistants at the University of Kentucky were segregated according to their race and put through different presentations. The separate trainings were provided to Young America’s Foundation through the organization’s Campus Bias Tip Line, which included emails and documents about the training. White RAs were sent to a “White Accountability Space” where they were given a document that listed 41 “common racist behaviors and attitudes of white people.” ... The person who alerted YAF to the segregation wished to remain anonymous and said that white students were required to have the document on their...
  • Christianity is good for us, evangelical college students find better wellbeing by seeking God

Teleios evaluated the influence of religious beliefs on the general wellbeing of college students. Of the 227 participants, there were almost equal portions of self-professed evangelicals, social Christians, agnostic/atheist and other religious groups. Students reported high levels of wellbeing with no statistical difference between religious belief systems. Evangelical Christians more often perceived themselves as: spiritual (P<0.001), accepted by God (P<0.001) and having more purpose (P=0.01). Students who identified as both evangelicals and ‘saved by grace’ showed greater wellbeing (P=0.015). IN SUMMARY, university students have high levels of wellbeing across all religious belief systems, but evangelical Christians show higher levels of...

REXBURG, Idaho (NEXSTAR) – Officials at Brigham Young University’s Idaho campus are warning students that intentionally contracting COVID-19 is grounds for possible permanent dismissal, according to a statement on the school’s website. “BYU-Idaho is deeply troubled by accounts of individuals who have intentionally exposed themselves or others to COVID-19, with the hope of getting the disease and being paid for plasma that contains COVID-19 antibodies,” according to the statement. The university warned on Sept. 25 that it might have to close the campus if the school failed to stay under coronavirus thresholds laid out by Eastern Idaho Public Health. That...

So, because we saved up and behaved responsibly, Joe Biden will punish us. Those who didn't save or work 80- to 90-hour weeks, who spent their money on nice things, now get us and other taxpayers to pick up the tab for their kids' education.

Oklahoma survived Texas after four overtimes Saturday afternoon, keeping its hopes of a Big 12 title alive in the process. One Texas supporter wasn’t too thrilled by the outcome. Immediately following the final play of the game, an interception of Sam Ehlinger by Tre Brown, the camera panned to upset Longhorns fans giving the surrender cobra. One of them did not appreciate being part of the moment. The female fan, clearly annoyed, proceeded to flick off the camera live on FOX. She’s going mega-viral in the aftermath.

On August 3, the Executive Committee of the Conference on College Composition and Communication approved a position statement on “Black Linguistic Justice.” The statement was crafted as a set of “demands” that “teachers stop using academic language and standard English as the accepted communicative norm.” The “Four Cs” is the largest and most important professional association for college-level writing teachers and is closely associated with the National Council of Teachers of English, an even larger group whose membership is mainly composed of secondary school English instructors. The lengthy and repetitive statement is actually entitled “This Ain’t Another Statement! This is...

Nowhere is “cancel culture” more deeply entrenched than in academia; it was commonplace there long before the actual phrase was coined to describe the current social media phenomenon. The gears of academia keep grinding away dissenting opinions, despite occasional paeans offered in the name of academic freedom. Those who propose uniquely original ideas can face all manner of retribution, from subtle digs from colleagues and administrators to the loss of employment. One such situation is occurring at Portland State University in Oregon. The political science department has rewritten its by-laws to distance itself from professor Bruce Gilley. Among the changes...

SMU beat No. 25 Memphis 30-27 on Saturday to stay unbeaten, but the school’s students weren’t there to see it. Police ejected the entire SMU student section — which numbered roughly 1,000 — late in the first half for not wearing masks or adhering to social distancing guidelines.
  • Governor DeSantis says closing schools in spring a mistake (equated people fighting the return of students to classrooms as the “flat earthers of our day.”)

Gov. Ron DeSantis said Friday that closing school campuses in the spring as the coronavirus pandemic took hold might have been one of the nation’s biggest “public health mistakes.” And, while appearing on the Drew Steele radio show, DeSantis equated people fighting the return of students to classrooms as the “flat earthers of our day.” Florida shut down school and college campuses in March, with students shifted to online learning. DeSantis and Education Commissioner Richard Corcoran have pushed heavily to reopen classrooms for the new school year. “In March we may not have had all the information, but in hindsight,...

FILE – In this Sept. 9, 2015 file photo, students arrive for the first day of school at Stuyvesant High School in New York. A push to diversify New York City’s most elite public high schools is facing a backlash from the group that makes up most of the schools’ current student bodies: Asian-Americans. (AP Photo/Mark Lennihan, File)One of the tenets of the pseudo-political religious cult that is Marxism is that capitalism is doomed by its own “internal contradictions.”Why do I call Marxism a religion? If you look at Marxism through the lens of comparative religion, what do you have?...

The campus battle over what I’ve previously called the equity agenda has recently shifted almost completely from a focus on gender to a focus on race. This has been accompanied by a series of surreal spectacles at the University of Washington in Seattle, where I teach. In the aftermath of the George Floyd protests, student activists have made new demands upon the school’s administration, while scathingly denouncing anyone they perceive as dissenters. Just consider our university president, Ana Mari Cauce—a Latina lesbian whose activist brother was murdered by the Ku Klux Klan. One would imagine that she’d command a certain...

Wells Fargo’s CEO recently faced outrage for a memo noting “the unfortunate reality is that there is a very limited pool of black talent to recruit from.” Rather than pseudo-righteous indignation, maybe it’s time to confront uncomfortable facts about both college preparedness and the way our society bases economic opportunity on college success. According to critical race theory, our intellectual class’ obsession du jour, any hiring disparity reflects structural racism, and companies like Wells Fargo simply “aren’t trying hard enough” to find black candidates. In reality, there are wide racial gaps even before college. The average black SAT taker trails...

On the first day of my political philosophy class at Shawnee State University in the spring of 2019, a biologically male student raised his hand and I called on him, unwittingly using the now-incendiary words, “Yes, sir.” As a professor of philosophy, I view the classroom as a place of dynamic discussion and exchange. And I work hard to foster an atmosphere of civility and rational discourse, a place where students can seek truth. This student approached me after class and said that he identified as a woman and demanded, from that point on, that I refer to him as...

The 2007 season is the most revered college football season of the past two decades. The season featured nine teams getting ranked in the top five of the BCS rankings in November. That’s not even counting a Boston College team that was No. 2 on Oct. 28 after an 8-0 start. The season was wild, wacky and featured everything we love about this crazy sport. And 2020 could wind up being a worthy sequel. Or even “The Godfather 2” to 2007’s “The Godfather.” Saturday started with No. 3 Oklahoma losing at home to Kansas State after giving up an inexplicable...

The importance of college football to university education is vastly overrated. Rather than an integral part of the college experience, football means more student debt, another burden for taxpayers, and a compromised education for athletes. The COVID-19 pandemic is prompting universities to develop costly new teaching methodologies, require expensive campus protection strategies, and has caused severe revenue declines due to reduced enrollment. Consequently, universities expect to lose millions of dollars, according to the Chronicle of Higher Education. Yet, surprisingly, no university administrators have canceled their high-cost, money-losing football programs to avoid academic cuts. Why do so many universities overlook the...
