I dunno how many of ya'll caught Lynyrd Skynyrd (named after the core members' high school gymn teacher -Leonard Skinnard- back in Jacksonville, Florida) live on stage, but this Yankee here was a BIG fan back in the days... Still a major enthusiast for blues rock, i.e. Cream, early Humble Pie (with Peter Frampton), early 70s Status Quo, et. al, actually- and I really do think these guys are the ones who got me into it. But the plane crash that ended the band kept me from ever seeing the real Skynyrd. I did -though- have the opportunity to see the...

Looks like the guy made it out of a '56 Ford convertible (or maybe a coupe), neat. I can already hear the "Why not Chevy" responses, but have you looked at the price of a Tri-Five lately? Nicely done with the diner theme, too: It don't get any more American than that! What would be funny is to drag it in for a smog test and then fire up the grill- hehMore news/views/humor at Reaganite Republican

Legend has it that a Modesto, California couple purchased the car in 1950, only for the wife to be widowed shortly thereafter when her husband died trying to save a drowning woman. The distraught lady placed the sleek Chevy in storage for 12 years, but later traded it for a new 1962 Rambler ($1650) from a nearby dealer: he recently sold the same car for $60,000. And surely worth it, the car dealer decided from the start to preserve it, so he barely took it out of the garage for 45 years... thus the all-original mint condition and an...

"Most states don't end in the letter 'A'..." Surrealist comedian Emo Phillips (dob 2.08.56) is an entertainer and comedian originating from the Chicago suburb of Downers Grove, Illinois. The highly unique brand of self-deprecating stand up comedy that made him famous is often built upon the paraprosdokians and garden path sentences spoken in a wandering falsetto tone. It's been said that the wide-eyed, confused, and childlike delivery is employed to invoke the 'wisdom of children' or the idiot savant... Philips has recorded three comedy albums, including E=mo², which won the 1985 New Music Award for best comedy album. It was...

Bernard M. W. Knox, an authority on the works of Sophocles, a prolific scholar and the founding director of Harvard’s Center for Hellenic Studies, died July 22 at his home in Bethesda, Md. He was 95. --Snip-- In his later years, he found himself defending classical learning against the champions of multiculturalism. “There is a sort of general feeling among radicals that the whole of the Western tradition — and the Greeks are the heart of that tradition — is something that has to be repudiated,” he told The Washington Post in 1992. “I feel appalled. God knows what the...

I'm looking for video of the classic McDonald's television commercial in which a father is in a swimming pool trying to get his daughter (Katy?) to jump from the side of the pool to him. He promises to catch her. She refuses. He finally bribes her with a trip to McDonald's and she jumps. If you know where the video can be found, please post a link to it or FReepmail me with the information. I need the video for a compilation piece on which I am working. I appreciate any help you can provide. I apologize for the vanity...
